By size, KC rated worst for seniors' transportation
Yes, sir, we surely are. Kansas City is ranked number one worst for our size--1 to 3 million people for senior citizens aged 65 to 79 years. And why should we care you might ask? Read from the site: "By 2015, more than 15.5 million Americans 65 and older will live in communities where public transportation service is poor or non-existent. That number is expected to continue to grow rapidly as the baby boom generation 'ages in place' in suburbs and exurbs with few mobility options for those who do not drive. It won't be pretty, folks, and it surely isn't good city planning.

I'm not in that age group yet... but I really think I just as soon stay home.
Many people are ignoring the ignorant stereotypes & retiring to WV. Our population is increasing & we are about the only state with a budget surplus. Low cost of living, low crime, perfect weather; we don't have to huddle behind closed doors & for $.40 we can catch the bus at the end of the driveway. Of course, its quite safe to go for a walk at any time of day.
To defend the city, we have the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum and their Bloch Gallery (which got "Building of the Year from Time Magazine the year it was opened), Loose Park, The Country Club Plaza, Crown Center, movies at matinee' on the Plaza for $4.00, good restaurants (no, it's not San Francisco or New York but we hold our own) and we are about to get a performing arts center that is virtually second to none, nationally, at least. Okay, we don't have palm trees but a lot of people like the 4 seasons we do get, etc., etc.
Do we have problems, issues? You bet but so does everywhere else, one way or another. I wouldn't trade it for North or South Dakota, in order to be safer, I can tell you that.
Sorry, Mo. I got off topic real bad. Defending West Virginia against the 'stupid hillbilly' nonsense is a life long duty that becomes obsessive at times.
My father retired to Florida until Hurricane Andrew, then he moved to Missouri. He liked it there.

Poor West Virginia--and West Virginians. They're always being "attacked" of a sort, for the whole "hillbilly" thing. Fact is, there are so many parts of so many states that are no worse than there and them including our own Missouri but also virtually every state between here and there.
I'll try again. Clarksburg, WV, where I live has a population of 10,900; but we have the best bus service in the state. I don't know why, or how that happened, but since neither my wife, or I, drive we really, really like it.

I always assumed you lived here in the area.
Our one bus system, The Max, is more of a direct line and goes quickly, but most would have to drive to it and then use it. The bus system otherwise is just clumsy, at least. Oh, any your 40 cent trip is I think $1.25 or $1.50 here and a sign greets you at the door that says "exact change only". Whoever did this survey knew what they were talking about.
I've heard that if you avoid the coal mining areas and the places where they've literally leveled the mountain for coal, WV is quite beautiful so I see what you're saying about fighting that stereotype, for sure.

And I always assumed you knew that I was Byron Funkhouser. The former mayor's younger brother who still lives in West Virginia. I seemed to get mistaken a lot for the blogger Byron Crawford. I found your blog through TKC & its one of my favorites. I almost always agree with you! Since I'm not local, if you want me to go away, I'll respect your wishes. People complain on TKC, but its his house & I told him the same thing I'm now telling you.
For starters, I try not to assume too much. That said, I thought that, anytime I saw "Byron" sign in, there was just one of them. Good to know there are two and which you are.
And for pity's sake, unless you cuss at me or get ugly, I wouldn't have you or virtually anyone else go away. Glad to know who you are and that you check in. Thanks. I didn't know anyone read me who lives in WV.
I don't think that Byron Crawford posts comments here, or on Tony's blog. Its just that Tony shares Byron's posts sometimes, & since I'm not a racial hater, other commentators assume that I'm black, & therefore I must be Byron Crawford.
I've never seen a comment with the blue 'Byron' & blogger logo here, or anywhere else, that wasn't mine.
Okay, great. Thanks for the clarification and information. Now I know yet a little bit more about the area and the respondents. It's good to know.
