The St. Joseph Diocese released a formal statement about a woman's recently announced lawsuits against that organization, saying she had been sexually abused. This will be a very brief blog entry.
Part of the statement:
John Tulipana resigned from the priesthood in February 1994 and has served in no ministerial capacity since that time. Tulipana's resignation came after the diocese received complaints of sexual misconduct with minors. With respect to Tulipana, the diocese is pursuing an action of laicization, which is a church proceeding required by the Code of Canon Law to effectuate the permanent removal of an individual from the priesthood.
Okay, so "Tulipana's resignation came after the diocese received complaints of sexual misconduct with minors."
I think it's important to ask one specific, looming question. That is, once they received complaints of sexual misconduct with minors, did they report this to the police? Or did they do this like the Vatican and keep it quiet? If they kept it quiet, aren't they culpable? Doesn't that make the St. Joseph Diocese of the Catholic Church accessories? Doesn't it make them guilty too?

You know, it's so funny... Right here in KC, the previous priest at my kid's catholic school was moved out, and into another church in north America. Why? During an investigation, the Missouri highway patrol discovered loads of adult pornography in his closet (not illegal, only distasteful) in addition to child pornography on his personal computer. Doing a little checking, it seems he was moved from a church out west church to the local church for a VERY similar transgression.
The dioceses response? Quietly move him yet again.
I'm not saying I know that happened in any of these local situations but any time they have heard these accusations and a) done nothing about them internally and/or b) not reported it to the police is, clearly, against city/state and federal laws and, in their words, "sinful".
thanks for your note.
