Benjamin Franklin is reported to have said, when asked what kind of government the US Constitution was written to give documentary and procedural foundation, answered "A republic if you can keep it."
Republic is an interesting word. Its closest synonym* is the word commonwealth. This salient detail appears to be lost on our delegation to Congress. They clearly don't see it that way.
*synonyms are not all created equal of course, some having stronger force and correlation than others. But this is cold comfort to those who robotically repeat that "a republic is a not a democracy". The words republic and democracy are in fact synonyms. But of course I believe that the word commonwealth is a far stronger synonym that democracy, since the concept of a commonwealth is intergenerational and therefore the only justification that can be made for any kind of State.
