150th anniversary of the Civil War

This week we start observing the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Let's just not call it celebrating.

They started having balls in the Carolinas and all kinds of things.  It's a big section in The Kansas City Star today, too, of course.

They ask a great question.  That is, did we learn anything?

And the answers are first, yes, we learned some things.  At least some of us did.  And the other answer is, no, unfortunately, not all of us learned things from it.

In the first place, some people have taken the position it wasn't about slavery and it certainly was.

Second, we still war.

We never learned that lesson.  We aren't smart enough to realize the insanity of war and to outlaw it, unilaterally, across the planet.

One more thing we should all keep in mind about the Civil War that people have seemed to be forgetting as we get further from it, in time:

Heads up, boys and girls--the South lost.

It would be nice if they would shut up about it now, get some humility and stop flying that stupid, racist flag.

Side note:  For a fantastic read on local Civil War history, read the following book:  "The Half Not Told" by Preston Filbert.  He's a former St. Joe boy (as am I) and it's on this area's role in the war.  Look for it.  You won't be sorry, far from it.

150 years later and the South still leads in obesity, birtherism, single mothers. creationism, domestic abuse, heart attacks, educational underachievement, republicanism, Fox News viewers, alchoholism, prescription drug abuse, and so much more. They receive far more from the public coffers than they contribute. Who actually won when we decided to keep the Union? They want out? Hell, let 'em go. We win. I spent time in the South during my military days. Smiles as smooth as butter while they stuck the knife in your back (while praising jebus). Not 4 Me!
