Yeah, we definitely need more guns

From The Huffington Post today: 5-Year-Old Boy Accidentally Shot And Killed By Twin CHICAGO — The twin 5-year-old boys had just climbed out of the bathtub and into their pajamas the night before the first day of kindergarten when a relative's handgun they'd found went off. The bullet struck Jonathan Jackson in the stomach. Less than an hour later, after being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, he was pronounced dead at 11:07 p.m. Monday. If you go to the link, you'll see he was a beautiful child. What a shame. And a waste. Link to original post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/10/5yearold-boy-accidentally_n_676869.html

"relatives believe the gun belongs to a 17-year-old uncle of the twins and that late Tuesday afternoon he was brought to the police station for questioning."

The gun was almost certainly illegal under Chicago law, even if the owner is an adult--hardly any handgun licenses have been issued so far, and these do not seem like they would be among the first to apply.

The gun was almost certainly illegal under state law--Pretty unlikely that a 17 year old Chicago resident had the required Illinois Firearms Owner ID card.

It was almost certainly illegal to leave the gun where the twins could get to it--unless they both had FOID cards.

The gun was almost certainly illegal under federal law, if the owner is in fact the 17 year old.

Yeah, we definitely need more gun laws.

A) I didn't call for more gun laws,

B) I suggested we need less guns,

C) The likelihood, then, that this gun was unregistered and sold at a gun show, without any background check is increased, substantially. It's not definite, sure, but quite possible.

I would only call for closing the gun show registration loophole, which seems obvious and intelligent and which we discussed here earlier this week and, yes, the big scary thing--registering guns, to repeat.
