"It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion." --Adam Smith, Scottish economist, moral philosopher and considered the "Father of Capitalism", rather ironically, now. That he is considered the "Father of Capitalism" and yet wrote this in his very famous and highly-regarded, quoted and referred to "Wealth of Nations" is more than a bit ironic now, I think we'd all agree, given what Capitalism has become in America. We have a government that is incredibly too large. No matter how much we give them, no matter how much we take from the rich, the government will want more.
Look at the budget of the federal Department of Agriculture, compared to agriculture revenue--if my math and figures are right, the budget is 3/4 of the size of all US agriculture. That sort of bloat is simply not sustainable.
We are approaching a tipping point, where over half of America is getting more money from the government than they pay in.
I think that counts as 'more than their proportion', when 40% are either paying nothing, or getting more in direct payments than they pay in.
What happens when 51% of voters think they are entitled to the earnings of 49%? I guess that's democracy, so the 49% should just keep producing so the 51% don't have to...
