Great news, Kansas City!

Men's Health magazine came out with a poll of the most and least active (read: healthy) cities across the country and sure, Kansas City is ranked down at the bottom, at number 91, sure. That makes us in the bottom 10 for least active cities and that's not good news, no sirree. But the good news? St. Louis is ranked 96th! They're in the bottom 5! Once again, we outdid the big city on the other side of the state. So say it with me, folks: WE'RE NOT ST. LOUIS!! (Now, get up off your butts and get moving). Omaha, Nebraska?? No. 4 on "America's Happiest Cities" List?

I'm stunned. Men's Health Magazine rated America's 100 "Happiest" and "Saddest" cities, as I said in the last post and check this out--unbelievably, Omaha, Nebraska came out number four on the list of "Happiest". You gotta' be kidding me. In what way is that? I mean, I like Omaha--to visit--and I love their "old town" area--from Spring to Fall--but one of the nation's "happiest cities"? Yikes. You're kidding me. Did they not either go there from November to March or hear about it? Then there's the fact that there's the "old town" area and--guess what--that's it. That's all there is to see in that city. Well, besides, maybe the Doorly Zoo but even that is, again, from the best, mildest, warmest part of Spring through the best part of Fall. I'm stunned. And once again, on these lists, nearby Lincoln, NE is close by at number 11. Excuse me, but with the exceptions of college football or business, why would anyone go to Lincoln? I don't get it. "America's Saddest Cities"?--St. Lou--not you

Men's Health Magazine just came out with a list of "America's Saddest Cities" and, yes, St. Louis is on there but you, Kansas City, you are not. I think the Sprint and the Kauffman Centers may have helped keep us off there. Either that or we're just not on their radar. Note: Detroit and Memphis are on there, too. In my next post, you won't believe who's number 4 on "Happiest American Cities." Anyway, enjoy, Kansas City--it's only been good press coverage lately. For now, anyway. 5 Hour Energy? Really?

This is what we do to ourselves.  This is one of the latest crazes.

"5 Hour Energy".

You've seen the product.

Now they've come out with television advertising, showing how we should wake in the morning, drink our "5 Hour Energy", then get out and go to the gym for our workouts and, it's implied, "be better people" because of it.

It's not enough we used coffee, first, and then Coca-Cola to get going in the past.   Now we're supposed to buy little bottles of straight chemicals in order to fulfill our roles in society.

This couldn't be much more stupid.

I've thought about this ever since I saw that first TV ad, making this suggestion.

Yesterday, I saw the following information online and it reiterated this for me.  I got it from a column on Yahoo! News and Mens Health Magazine on the "7 Worst Supermarket Ripoffs":

5-Hour Energy
There’s a lot of hype in this bottle, but the only ingredient that provides any significant energy is caffeine, of which there are 135 grams in each bottle. That’s less than you’d find in a14-ounce cup of coffee (Dunkin’ Donuts 14-ounce medium has 164 grams of caffeine). Cost for a cup of coffee: A buck or two. Cost for 5-Hour Energy: Between $3 and $4.

I mean, come on, people, let's not be stupid.  Let's not let companies exploit us THIS much.

Sheesh.  (head banging against wall).

And someone is no doubt making a fortune on this somewhere.

Come on, Kansas City--let's do better than this

Men's Health recently released its report on the top 10 fittest and fattest cities in the US and the news for us in Kansas City could be worse but it's not good:

Top 10 fattest Cities:

1. Corpus Christi, TX
2. Charleston, WV
3. El Paso, TX
4. Dallas, TX
5. Memphis, TN
6. Kansas City, MO
7. San Antonio, TX
8. Baltimore, MD
9. Houston, TX
10. Birmingham, AL

Sixth. Ick.

At least we're not in first, like we were some years ago, eh?

But we can do better than this and we need to.

So, folks, get to know nutrition. Get to know food. Too many people don't.

Eat less pizza. Eat less pasta. Eat less carbohydrates and starchy foods.

And for pity's sake, eat more vegetables and fruit.

Lots more.

And get up off the sofa.
