A Question for UMKC

You know all those dormitories over at UMKC they just tore down?

Image may contain: sky, outdoor and water

UMKC says student housing poorly built,

must be torn down

Question:

Shouldn't either the architect or construction company--or both--be held liable for this mess, for all these?

Less than a decade old?  Less than 10 years? And this is necessary?

Check Out This Chart From the New York Times Today on this virus

Check out this enclosed chart showing your percentage probability you'll/we'll contract the virus given the known cases already found in a county. Very eye-opening. From today's NYT.

To better see the chart and for the article from which it comes:

To put the above chart in perspective, Wyandotte County presently reports 137 cases. Johnson County, 183 cases, according to the Kansas City Star. More from the Star:

According to state data at least 135 cases have been confirmed in Jackson County and at least 172 have been confirmed in Kansas City.

Apply those totals from our local counties to this chart above and see what conclusions you come to.

So yes, let's take this stay at home idea and order seriously.  It doesn't last forever. Stay positive. It's Spring.

Be careful out there, y'all. Be safe. Get a mask if you haven't got one already?

And stay home.

A Challenge to the Churches and Media to Stop Being "Politically Correct"

Image result for banning german luxury cars

So now this President, Trump came out and said we should have a nationwide ban on German luxury automobiles.

What is this guy smoking?

Can you even imagine this?

Banning the entire nation of their BMWs, Mercedes Benz and Audi automobiles, at least?

What would his big, wealthy donors drive?

Lincoln Continentals?

Please. Who are we kidding?

But here's where the "political correctness" comes in.

Why aren't we seeing and hearing reporters, especially from local TV stations, going out to the local German luxury auto dealers and asking them what they think of this idea?

Why don't we see and get that?

I'll tell you why.

We don't see that because the local TV stations and newspapers and media outlets don't want to alienate any advertisers or readers.

Dime to a doughnut says those owners and even, likely, the managers of those luxury car dealers are high paid Republicans or at least Right Wingers. The last thing they want to do is get on the airwaves, TV, radio or get quoted in the newspaper with their picture, saying it's the outrageously stupid idea it is. God forbid they tell the truth and push away some Trump follower who was just about to plop down $58,000 or more on a brand new, shiny, 4 wheel automobile from Stuttgart.

And it's the same way with the churches.

When was the last time you heard a huge outcry from any church or from any pulpit when some government representative or government agency comes out and announces cuts in programs for the poor?

The answer, of course, is either never or long, long ago.

Once again, those ministers and priests up there giving sermons don't want to run the risk of alienating some Right Winger or Republican in the pew. God forbid they not make their weekly contribution to the plate he's about to pass around, pun heavily intended.

Political party wants to give yet more tax cuts to the already-wealthy and corporations, thus driving up the national debt, drastically, while they push for cuts to even Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid?

Sure! No problem! You won't hear a word from any "man of God."

Who's that Jesus guy?

Wha'd he say? What was he about?

So local news outlets? KMBC? KCTV5? WDAF?

What say you?

Do you have any guts?

Will you stop reporting on the latest kitty cat videos on Youtube on our evening news and instead, go out to Aristocrat Motors on I-35 or some such and ask the owner there what he thinks of this President and his brilliant idea?

Please?

We dare you.

March For Our Lives Kansas City Big Success and the Media Coverage It Created

The March For Our Lives event here in Kansas City was a big, big success yesterday. It was exciting and gratifying and really wonderful how many came out and the success of it all.

The Star has a fantastic, brief video of the March For Our Lives Kansas City rally/march that took place yesterday on their site.

March for Our Lives protest in KC

draws thousands

They gave the event some quite good coverage, thankfully. Here's more.

at March for Our Lives

Local TV media also gave great coverage.

Not just the Kansas City march alone, either.

Good to great regional and national coverage, too.

For any against this movement, I'm reminded of the old, 60's Dylan song.

There's lots more from the event, pictures, etc., here, too.

It was a terrific day and event.

Now, we go forward.

KCPD and Target Doing a Very Cool Thing Today

I had some time away from the office today and had to run some errands. One of those errands took me to the Target store at Ward Parkway Mall.  Those pesky vacuum cleaner bags, you know?

I pulled into the parking lot and, before getting parked, noticed a Kansas City, Missouri police department squad car, parked there but far out in the lot. It seemed odd. I never see that.

I got inside, of course, only to see an officer. "Ah, that's the one who parked there", I thought.

Then I saw another officer.

And another.

And sure, it's the holidays but the store seemed unusually busy for the middle of the week and middle of the day.

Pretty soon, I noticed there were police--and families with them, it seemed--all over the place.

I stopped this one young officer and asked him what was up.

He said that, yes, the KCPD did this, every year, I guess. Today there were going to be 152 kids go through with them, shopping, today alone. They call it their "Shop With a Cop" program, you guessed it, for the holidays.

I congratulated and thanked him and a few of the other officers there.

What a fantastic program. Seems Target sponsors it.

Seems it's quite the national program. Lee's Summit does it, as does Parkville and  Prairie Village, on the Kansas Side and lots of other cities and towns in the area. Unknown to me, it's been going on for years. This video, from KMBC News, is from 2014.

So kudos, KCPD, and to you, too, Target and really, all of Kansas City.

What a great thing. What a great, even beautiful thing to do.

It's enough to give a person hope.

Happy holidays, y'all.

Why We Should VOTE NO on Question 1 Tomorrow On A New Single-Terminal Airport

Personally thanking KMBC TV-9 for recording and posting this since every other media outlet in town either mindlessly supports the more than 1 billion dollar boondoggle that is a new, single-terminal airport or they're silent on the issue.

The Show-Me Institute's Patrick Tuohey says Kansas City voters should vote "no" on Question 1.

Nov. 3, 2017 Editorial Reply --

KCI Airport Vote - KMBC.com

Finally, finally some logic and fiscal responsibility on this issue.

Thank you, KMBC! and thank you, Patrick Tuohey!

This video, above, is newer, but he videotaped the following response to the airport idea March 6, 2014.

"Patrick Tuohey explains that the cost of a new terminal at Kansas City International Airport would be passed along to passengers. Higher ticket prices would result and that could cause airlines and travelers to look for alternatives to KCI."

Tomorrow, folks! Vote! And vote NO--a resounding NO!--on Question 1 on the ballot in Kansas City.

Big, fun crazy times with and for the Royals and Kansas City

Kansas City and our Royals, going to the World Series. Meantime, Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis on site, Eric Stonestreet on set of Modern Family.
KC, hitting the big time in a few ways.

From the Star:

Then there was this very cool story:

and this from 2 years ago::

Eric Stonestreet, Paul Rudd, Jon Hamm, Jason Sudeikis and Rob Riggle. The four actors sang "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during an interleague game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on June 22, 2012.

Eric Stonestreet, Paul Rudd, Jon Hamm, Jason Sudeikis and Rob Riggle

So congratulations, Kansas City, many congratulations. Enjoy. These are the good old days, for sure.

One More Reason for a New, Single-Terminal Airport

Yessir, here we are. Yet one more reason for a new, single terminal airport at KCI, tearing down and walking away from our existing terminals:

FLASH MOBS!

Think about it!

As it stands now, with those pesky, ultra-convenient, already-built terminals we have and enjoy, with a gleaming, shiny, new single terminal, the airport authority could hire people like this and film a "spontaneous" dancing, flash mob. And if you're lucky enough to be there, you'll get to see and enjoy it.

Worst case scenario?  You'll get to watch it, after the fact, on KMBC-TV and KCTV-5 "news", along with the daily YouTube catch-up and cat and dog video segments.

It'll go viral and JUST THINK OF ALL THE GREAT MEDIA ATTENTION KANSAS CITY AND KCI WILL GET.

Sure, it'll cost us millions and it's stupid to tear down good, working, again, convenient, existing buildings--that we actually enjoy and appreciate--and it's horrible for the environment, what with throwing two entire terminals in a dump somewhere and the airlines don't want or recommend it and, oh, sure, our price per ticket of flying in and out of that new airport will go WAY up, as other cities that have done this have learned, to their shame, expense and frustration but...

WE'LL HAVE FLASH MOBS!!

AND A SHINY NEW AIRPORT!

More double-barrel stupid from Republicans in Jeff City

I can barely believe all I see coming out of the small-minded, destructive Republicans at our own Jefferson City statehouse.  Here's the latest one:

Missouri GOPAllow Parents to Pull Their Kids From Science

Get a load of this little gem:

Missouri Republicans have drafted a bill that would allow parents to pull their children from science classes that are teaching the theory of evolution. According to the National Center for Science Education (NCSE), Missouri’s House Bill 1472 would effectively “eviscerate” the teaching of biology in the state.

Remember when the nation was all for and about education and science and math and, well, honestly, intelligence?

Yeah, I sure do.

And then we started getting these demagogues who not only want to pander to their own small, small-minded voting base but also want to throw religion into our government and politics.

What gets me is not just that it's not smart--truly stupid--but that it's so irresponsible. Let's not condemn our children to mere ignorance, let's foist religion and non-science on them, too.

Then, as if that weren't enough, as if that didn't condemn Missourians enough, they came up with yet more and truly outdid themselves:

Missouri lawmakers mull 72-hour abortion waiting time

Then, of course, they've been working on this nonsense for at least months:

Forget that it goes against national law, forget that, totally.

It all reminds me of a movie:

That one or Psycho,
