First they proved themselves to be rabid racists, trying to disavow the annual, national Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday--and they've followed up on that a few times, anyway, in different actions--now they've outdone themselves.
Apparently the NRA runs the whole state.
Did you see this from the AP?
"The Arizona House has voted to make Arizona the third state allowing people to carry concealed weapons without a permit."
"The House voted 36-19 on Thursday to send the measure to Gov. Jan Brewer."
"The legislation would make it legal for most U.S. citizens 21 or older to carry a concealed weapon in Arizona without the permit now required."
"Well, yeehaw! Ain't it grayt to be an Areezonan?? Let's mozey on down to that thar saluun with our sixguns on hour hips and git us some pritty gurls!"
That does it for me and Arizona. If I go, I race into Grand Canyon, look around with all the other tourists and get the hell out.
I'm sure they'll be glad of it, sissy, educated Liberal that I am.
What a sick bunch.

Is gun crime a big problem in Vermont? Alaska? Did it go up in Alaska when they no longer required licenses? Arizona already had legal open carry without a license--does it make much difference if there is a shirt over it?
Shouldn't we let people do what they want, as long as nobody is harmed?
Does that include the concealed weapon of a brain?
Sevesteen,
by decreasing the quantity of guns, or at least not increasing them, as you and I have discussed before, that's what we're trying to avoid--people being harmed.
mr
You appear to be taking the stance that you are not actually anti-gun, but rather anti-violence--but with a belief that eliminating guns will reduce violence.
...but your arguments are faith-based rather than evidence based. We have experience that says expanding legal concealed carry does not increase crime. We have evidence that the Brady Campaign gun law score is not correlated at all with crime rate.
Do you have any evidence that stricter standards reduces violence?
I am absolutely anti-violence, first, followed, logically, by anti--weapon, assuming one is a lot less likely to fire a bullet if you don't have the means to do so, yes.
I'm not, in fact, faith-based, but statistics based.
They're not your statistics, however, as we both know.
My evidence is based on the statisics that the rest of the world has less guns than us--and less of a cowboy, shoot 'em up mentality--and they all have less murders than we do (e.g., all European countries our neighbors, Canada and Mexico, all the Scandinavian countries, of course, the former Soviet Union, etc., etc.).
We just aren't that bright, as a group. We love our guns and we don't want to give up on our murders, either, apparently.
mr
If you are going to look at crime vs guns in other countries, you need to also look at other factors--otherwise, I get to excitedly point at Washington DC and Chicago as conclusive proof that gun control doesn't work here.
There is no single factor that correlates closely with crime rate. Gun laws are overshadowed by culture, ethnic mix-(not so much which ethnicities, but whether there are distinct groups), whether there is extensive ghettoization, government corruption, and wide disparity in income. Most Swiss homes have an issued machine gun and ammo, without a crime problem. Mexico has much stronger gun laws than the US, but our idiotic drug war has magnified their corruption, with a resulting increase in crime.
Just about the worst situation with gun laws is unenforced or unenforceable restrictions--where guns are reasonably available, but only if you break the law.
Let's keep it simple:
1) We have more guns, per capita, than any other nation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_gun_ownership) and
2) We have more people shot and killed, both, than any other nation (http://www.allcountries.org/gun_ownership_rates.html)
'nuff said.
mr
1. True.
2. As Archie Bunker said "Would you rather they was pushed out a window?" A good bit of crime will happen as long as there is some tool. Some crime happens or is made worse because there is a gun, some is thwarted because there is a gun--otherwise police wouldn't bother to carry them.
3. The people shot and killed, and the people doing the shooting are disproportionately minority. Whites have rates in line with other advanced countries. 'nuff said, or is it more complicated than that?
