All the More Reasons, Today, Why Kansas City Needed a Classical Station

Big, breaking announcements today from the arts community, showing all the more, why, exactly, Kansas City really needed a 24 hour radio station.

In summary:

"...the Kansas City Ballet, the Kansas City Symphony, the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and the Harriman-Jewell Series announced Tuesday that they have canceled all performances at the Kauffman Center for the next six months, until January 2021.

Painful. That hurts.

It is going to be one dark, very quiet Fall and Winter, campers.

So again, all the more reason our getting back a 24 hour classical music station, 91.9 FM, is and was so important.  And wonderful.

Thank you, KCUR and William Jewell College! Thank you so very much!

American Guild of Organists Convention Here In Kansas City This Summer

I just learned the American Guild of Organists is meeting here in Kansas City this year for their national convention.

AGO 2018 National Convention -

American Guild of Organists

The 2018 AGO National Convention

It will be July 2 through 6th in venues across the city. Here's a bit about it from their website:

The AGO National Convention

At the 2018 AGO National Convention in Kansas City you will see and hear incredible performances by world-class organists and choirs, hear new music by some of the world’s best modern composers, be able to check out dozens of workshops and seminars, and enjoy creative worship services in some of the most beautiful and historic organ venues in the country. The members of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of The American Guild of Organists look forward to sharing the grandeur of the city’s organs and performance venues with you from July 2 – 6, 2018.

Our own local Joyce Didonato took a moment to welcome guests to the city and event.

It will, without doubt, be some fantastic moments, times and events at these different venues to enjoy the music but also the locations, people and energy, all.

Enjoy, Kansas City. And enjoy Kansas City!

Kudos to the Star today, on the airport

Kudos and salutations to the Kansas City Star today, for printing an article that goes against their own, earlier editorial on our airport:

Kansas City Airport Address

Airport terminal projects don't guarantee growth

It's as some of us in town, me for one, Save KCI! another, have said, building a new airport in no way guarantees more airlines and flights. No way.

From the article:

Building a new airport terminal doesn’t guarantee that kind of success, says Steven Malanga, senior fellow with the Manhattan Institute, a market-oriented public policy think tank. Malanga has written about airport expansions that didn’t live up to their promise, such as in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

“People are right to be suspicious because there is a tendency within the aviation bureaucracy to want to update by building, rather than reconstructing,” Malanga said. “One thing you can be sure of in the current economic environment, if you’ve seen your own air traffic shrink, it’s unlikely a new terminal will drive economic growth.”

Mike Boyd, a Denver-based aviation specialist who is not involved with KCI’s plans but is familiar with the airport, agreed that a new terminal doesn’t assure new business.

“No, it won’t bring in new airlines,” he said. “They’ve all merged or gone out of business.”

It's as though the Airport Authority--and anyone who wants to push a new airport on us--wants to totally disavow or ignore that we've gone through the worst economic downturn in 80 years. When that happens and virtually all, if not specifically all, businesses are hurt and experience cuts in business and so, naturally, revenue, wouldn't it follow that airlines business would also decrease? And when that is the case, as it most surely is, how does building a new airport help that? How would that help business
And when you add that downturn to the fact that, as said, above, the airlines have merged, how, exactly, would building a new airport add new service to the area?  How does that work unless, along with that new building, you somehow, magically, I don't know, create a mountain range for people to come to, also?  Or an ocean? Or something, to draw people here?

If we're talking new buildings to increase flights, the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, downtown, is far more likely to bring in more flights than a new airport. And we already did that.

Since when do people fly into cities because of or for their airports, regardless the city? How and when does that make any sense?

Sure, a handful of architects might fly in---might---but that's not going to create the kind of sustained increase needed or desired.

The author of the article hints at what should happen when they write about what Mr. Boyd, above says need to happen:

But he is emphatic that KCI must change or continue to lose ground to its competitors.

I say again, one more time, and I'll keep saying it, we can update and innovate the current, existing buildings, I believe, and achieve all we want and need.

If we update the existing airport, we can get the single building we need for security by using most or all of Terminal B for that. Then, by creating walkways out to Terminals A and C, we can gain what's needed in gates. Along with that, we could and should install updates in HVAC and other energy updates and the drainage from the jets wash, we can gain the both environmental improvements as well as energy savings.

There would be no reason to not make improvements in appearance on the buildings, also.  With all this, we'd also gain huge cost savings over the 1,200,000,000 dollars that would otherwise be necessary for a totally new, single terminal.

Let's not throw away one diamond--the existing airport--just so we can buy yet another.

We need to stop this "Let's throw away this building and build another" mentality in the area, at least, if not the nation. This would be a great place to start.

Fun idea?

I just saw these on an architect friend's Facebook page today. He's into design, rather naturally.

Wouldn't it be great if we organized a great number of people across the metropolitan area, at least, to buy one of these and then pitch them around our new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts one night?

I'm thinking maybe for some fundraiser or something.

I'd photograph it like crazy.

Thanks, Sven.

The Kauffman

A friend of mine put this picture up on his Facebook page of the Kauffman. I haven't verified but I think he took it with his cell phone, maybe last evening.

I just liked it too much and wanted to share it. I think it pretty outstanding. (Kudos, Barry).

We're so fortunate to have the Kauffman Center.

July, 2012: A Huge Month for Kansas City (with thanks to the Kauffmans)

First we get the Major League Baseball All-star Game, July 10.

As if that weren't enough, as of last evening, local weather forecasters are also calling for a cool down to an 89 degree high for next Tuesday's game.

Yeehaw.

Then, next up Kansas City gets big national (international?) TV coverage on PBS, July 28, for our new performing arts center and local singer/performer Joyce DiDonato who has done so well for herself--and our city.

I'm telling you, between these two events, Kansas City, Missouri (sorry, Kansas) will be getting some fantastic national coverage and exposure. First for--literally--major league sports, then for major league art.

What's funny about all this attention, too, is that neither event--the Allstar Game or the PBS show on our Performing Arts Center--would have happened without Ewing, Muriel and Julie Kauffman. Many thanks, again, to all three. We are so fortunate in so many ways to have you in town and to be gifted by your presence and hard work and now, your many gifts to Kansas City.

Good on you, Kansas City. It's our time to shine.

Enjoy the spotlights and attention.

KC in the news two big ways right now

Kansas City seems to be getting more great national and even international attention. First, The Atlantic Monthly magazine has an article on us (thanks again to the Kauffmans): Kansas City Bets on Culture If you build a shiny new performing-arts center, will the creative class come?
Besides the great press and the terrific article on us, the additional great kicker is that the photo they used, above, is our own Eric Bowers so more kudos to him, for sure. Here's the second great write up we got:
It seems famous and popular international chef Anthony Bourdain came to town and has good things to say about us, too: Celebrity chef Bourdain’s tour of KC flavors airs Monday So we'll be on television to the world this Monday evening. Yahoo. Is there better food in the world? Sure, there's no denying that. Does Kansas City have some good to great chefs and so, food? You bet. And Anthony Bourdain concurs. Kudos Kansas City. Enjoy. And have a great weekend. To see Kansas City's own Joyce DiDonato

It's one thing to hear of Ms. DiDonato's different successes--singing at the Met in New York, for instance--and another to see or hear that she's won a Grammy. I think it's quite another to be able to see here, if even only on a YouTube video, an actual performance and her talent. Great stuff. She performs in March at the Kauffman Center, too, in case you care to see her. Get tickets here: http://www.kauffmancenter.org/

More great--and now timely--things from the Kauffman Center

Hot on the heels of last evening's Grammy Awards, The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts has, rather conveniently, announced The GRAMMY Museum To Launch Music Education Initiative In Kansas City Scheduled to debut as a pilot program in Kansas City, Mo. in June 2012, The GRAMMY Museum’s Music Revolution Project will offer talented youth the opportunity to engage in musical discourse and performance with other peers from across the country, spurring innovative ideas within the realm of American music. As I said, yet more great things for and from the Kauffman Center and the city, area and even region. Welcome to town, Mr. Takei!

George Takei, the actor mostly known for playing Mr. Sulu on the "Star Trek" television show is in town to appear with the Kansas City Symphony this weekend at the Kauffman Center. I understand both shows are sold out. They are having a "Sci-Fi Spectacular with George Takei" and playing things from "Star Trek", "Star Wars", "2001: A Space Odyssey" and more. For those going, I'm sure it will be great fun. They warn on the Symphony page that there will be lasers used during the performance. What a hoot. Great Kansas City Arts news!

Great news, indeed! Kansas City's (actually, Prairie Village's) own Joyce DiDonato and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts are going to be in a documentary on PBS. The working title is HOMECOMING: THE KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY PRESENTS JOYCE DIDONATO Their write-up on it: "Architect Moshe Safdie’s extraordinary new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts provides the stunning backdrop for a 60-minute performance-documentary profiling the young, Grammy Award-winning musicians of the Kansas City Symphony, their vibrant artistic director and conductor Michael Stern, and the radiant, internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato. A concert wrapped by documentary narratives, this Arts Festival special tracks Ms. DiDonato’s nostalgic return to her hometown, and her thrilling Kauffman Center debut, after a triumphant appearance with Placido Domingo at The Metropolitan Opera in New York. Together, Joyce DiDonato, Maestro Stern and the Kansas City Symphony create a musical program as grand and ambitious as the Kauffman Center itself. Produced by Kansas City Public Television (KCPT) in association with veteran PBS music producers James Arntz & John Paulson." Further proof to all the naysayers that building the Kauffman Center was somehow a bad idea. And thank you, thank you, thank you, to the Kauffman family, Julia and her parents, for this and the many gifts they've given Kansas City. As I've said before, we're eternally grateful. KC on Budget Travel Magazine's "Top Budget Travel Destinations for 2012"

Yes, we are. It seems the zeitgeist right now, mostly due to our new Kauffman Center for the Arts, is all about getting to Kansas City. What the magazine has to say: "Thanks to arts-centric developments both large-scale and grassroots, this Midwestern city is fast becoming a hotbed of high culture. In September, the $326 million Moshe Safdie–designed Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts opened to host the Kansas City Ballet, the Lyric Opera, and the Kansas City Symphony, along with one-off performances of all stripes. The center's arrival has only helped to bolster the already-vibrant Crossroads Arts District—a funky enclave of 70-plus galleries in renovated warehouses, interspersed with boutiques and restaurants—that surrounds it. Thankfully, Kansas City's prices haven't caught up to its highbrow reputation. Both hotels and rental cars are cheaper than they were in 2010, with rooms going for about $137 per night (a 3 percent drop) and cars averaging $55 per day." We couldn't agree more. (Except actually, didn't the Kauffman Center cost $413m?) Link: http://www.budgettravel.com/feature/top-budget-travel-destinations-for-2012,8005/?page=4
