Celebration at the Station this weekend

Celebration at the Station airs Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 8pm on KCPT. 

Located at Kansas City’s Union Station, music is by the Kansas City Symphony with Michael Stern, music director. This year  they're also featuring Oleta Adams, Musicorps and host Jim Birdsall with Charles Bruffy, chorus director.

Bank of America Celebration at the Station is the largest FREE Memorial Day Weekend event in the Midwest. The Kansas City Symphony, led by Music Director Michael Stern, performs patriotic favorites against the backdrop of Kansas City’s historic Union Station. The event concludes with their wonderful, annual fireworks display. The Kansas City Symphony is grateful to Bank of America for making this gift to our city possible.

This year's Celebration at the Station will also have a variety of food truck vendors on-site, offering a wide array of food and beverage options! Including The Moose Truck,New York Dawg Pound, Cajun Cabin, Monk's Roast Beef, Kona Ice-Trucks, Jerusalem Cafe Hookah Bar, Jazzy B's and CoffeeCakeKC.

Welcome to town, Mr. Takei!

George Takei, the actor mostly known for playing Mr. Sulu on the "Star Trek" television show is in town to appear with the Kansas City Symphony this weekend at the Kauffman Center. I understand both shows are sold out. They are having a "Sci-Fi Spectacular with George Takei" and playing things from "Star Trek", "Star Wars", "2001: A Space Odyssey" and more. For those going, I'm sure it will be great fun. They warn on the Symphony page that there will be lasers used during the performance. What a hoot. Saturday at the Raphael

 

Saturday afternoon on the Plaza, the Raphael Hotel set up this performance stand and had 4 members of the Kansas City Symphony perform, mostly for guests of the hotel, of course, just outside their front door. The music and the evening were beautiful.

Sam Brownback, hypocrite extraordinaire

The guy who went out of his way to kill the Arts Commission in Kansas thinks there should be more things like the Kansas City Symphony coming out to the Flint Hills in an effort to get more tourism to the area, according to an associated report on KCUR this morning:

And doesn't likely see any inconsistency with this.

Kauffman Performing Arts Center, Sunset

 

The Center isn't even finished and it's already beautiful and a maker of fantastic color and, in the case of Eric Bowers, terrific photographs.  It's already exciting.  I look forward to its completion.  (I think the above pic shows better in the larger version--click on it).
