In remembrance
"Now, I think that I should have known that he was magic all along. I did know it - but I should have guessed that it would be too much to ask to grow old with and see our children grow up together. So now, he is a legend when he would have preferred to be a man." --Jackie Kennedy

I remember. I was in the fourth grade. We were having a fire drill & as was the routine, we walked down a side street in single file & stood in front of a row of houses until we got the all clear. On this day, a woman came out of the first house & told the teacher what had happened. When we reentered the school building everyone (all grades 1 - 12) went to the auditorium & listened to the radio for breaking news. Later, we were dismissed & walked home.
The adults were in shock: this was the first assassination of the 60's, in fact the first one in modern times. I was too young to understand much except, as was my nature, I noted the expressions on the faces around me & understood that something terribly sad had happened.
Just now, I looked this back over. Saw the picture, reread the quote and got chills.
Every November and any time I rethink that whole long, ugly time--his assassination--or when I hear Bobby or Ted in one of their famous, so sad quotes on their other brother who just died, it can really wipe me out.

I have to stop writing about this.
Next year will be the fiftieth anniversary. Hang in there for one more year.
