Notes on tonight's Golden Globe Awards

1) Jonah Hill?  Seriously?

2) Arnold Schwarzenegger? Are you kidding me? Do you have no shame at all?

3) It should have been Tony Kushner

4) Glenn Close--that hair.  Wow.  That was bad

5) Jodie Foster--  What??

6) Taylor Swift needs to lay low. Taylor Swift needs to not be seen anywhere and/or everywhere for a while. She needs to a) not date or b) if she does date, don't break up or c) if she does date and does break up, for the love of all that is good, don't, for pity's sake, for our sake, don't write yet another song about your latest breakup. Get a new theme.  Wow. It's painful out here.

Three notes on Angelina Jolie

1) She seems anorexic; 2) She seems to be "flipping out", what with the seemingly clear anorexia and that whole "I gotta' make sure I stick my leg out of this dress everywhere I'm seen" thing and 3) I think she and Brad will split (OH, NO. I'M AGHAST). I mean, sure, it's a Hollywood couple and that's as frequent and cheap as you get but I think somehow people thought these two were different and above all that. I doubt it. Seriously. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but soon and for the rest of their lives.

A new series: Films that could never be remade

Yes, I'm starting this new thread on this blog--films that were so either perfect or just part of their time, they could never be remade. This is the first. Maybe not the best example, for whatever reason, but this is certainly one. It couldn't be redone partly because of the cast and partly, I think, for the time period in which it was made. It was a favorite of our Mom's. Whenever I now hear Christopher Plummer sing this, I can't help but get verklempt.

Two very different people, totally "owning" the same song

This is bizarre

Okay, two weeks ago, Whitney Houston died, as we all--heaven knows--know. Last week, the funeral, which took both Saturday and Sunday. Tonight, her best, most famous movie, "Bodyguard" was on, no surprise. I expected it. But I had totally forgotten that the story involved her character in that movie being up for an Oscar. And of course the Oscars are tomorrow evening. I mean, really, once in a while, coincidence or no, things just rather freak you out with how timed they are. My Father's funeral--his death and the funeral, for instance, and the timing of it and a few things--was very similar. Sometimes you're given to thought about the weird, eerie, syncronicity of things.

On the Oscars last night

A couple notes.

First, whoever came up with the idea for pairing James Franco and Anne Hathaway as hosts is being pilloried this morning, at least in the press, if not in reality.  What an awful matchup that was.  I can't be sure if it was the writing or their respective deliveries and I think it may well be both but that was really awful.  The writing tried so hard to make them funny by being cute, it ended up painful.  The writers should be dismissed immediately and forever, at minimum.  (As an example, the review below, at the link, is rather scathing.  And entertaining.  And, I think, largely, if not completely on target).

Second, no surprise, "The King's Speech" swept the night.  That was both predicted and expected.

But "True Grit" getting 10 nominations and zilch by the end of the night?  Yikes.

Fortunately, it's not important.  At least, it's not important to most of the world.

Back to reality.
