On bin Laden: What probably still needs to happen
Sure, the Navy Seals did the right thing in getting rid of bin Laden's body at sea. You can be sure all the options were discussed as to what could and should take place. As they've said, this way he's not martyred and no shrines get built at his burial place.
But the next thing that should happen?
I hate to say it but they probably no doubt need to level the house he was at.
They need to either ask or tell the Pakistanis that's what we're going to do--give them warning and then level the place.
No shrines, for sure.

Americans: crazy or stupid or what?
That last president took us into a huge, hugely mistaken, wrong war by ATTACKING ANOTHER SOVEREIGN NATION unprovoked all the while his (our) 13 intelligence agencies told him the leader of said country (Saddam Hussein, Iraq) was NO THREAT TO THIS COUNTRY but did the American people, by and large, say much?
Hell, no.
Sure, some of us protested, ahead of time, the attack on Iraq and the Iraqi people but by and large, the American people--including the people in Washington, a lot of whom should have known better--were behind the lying president and his administration.
Heck, the media--including The New York Times--all but lay down and roll over for the guy so he could go in and attack.
Now? This time around, with this president, who only loaned some of our planes to attack a lunatic leader of another nation because he was outright KILLING HIS OWN PEOPLE?
This is what's happening:
Hell, no.
Sure, some of us protested, ahead of time, the attack on Iraq and the Iraqi people but by and large, the American people--including the people in Washington, a lot of whom should have known better--were behind the lying president and his administration.
Heck, the media--including The New York Times--all but lay down and roll over for the guy so he could go in and attack.
Now? This time around, with this president, who only loaned some of our planes to attack a lunatic leader of another nation because he was outright KILLING HIS OWN PEOPLE?
This is what's happening:
You bloody hypocrites.
You idiots.
You morons.
You've got to be one of the 3.
And this coming from a peacemonger like me.
Sure, he'd better keep his promises that the attacks our planes are making are only short-term and that we're going to get out "in a few days" and sure, I'm skeptical about it and want to make sure we keep him to it, sure.
But for everyone on the Right and Left, his own political party and opposing ones to now come down on him this hard for doing what a week ago people were calling for and saying he was "going too slowly" and being "indecisive" is just hypocrisy or insanity or hypocritical insanity.
Dubya and "Darth Dick" must just be laughing their asses off right now.
First Pakistan and now Afghanistan (with thanks and a hat tip to Radioman)
Remember that CIA agent--I mean American diplomat--who shot and killed two Pakistani civilians that upset the Pakistanis so much?
Yeah, that one.
Did you read where we paid $2 million in literal "blood money" to the families so he could get out?
Yeah, well, we did.
Did you also hear that THE VERY NEXT DAY we sent in drone missiles to Pakistan and killed a bunch of them?
Yeah, we did that, too.
Well, all this comes on top of the fact that right now, all over Europe and Pakistan and Afghanistan and who knows where all, people are seeing pictures of our own American soldiers posing with people they killed. Apparently the dead are easily proven to be civilians--innocent ones, at that--and that our guys murdered them.
Yeah. Great news, huh?

It seems a few soldiers, at least, killed a bunch of Afghanis and then took what are being called "trophy pictures" of their work. It's all over Der Speigel magazine (again, see link below), etc.
Between the cost of this war, first in American soldiers and then in money and materiel, and then the damage it's doing to us being over there, with the very people we're supposed to be liberating, we're absolutely going to have to leave, one way or another and sooner rather than later.
I mean that and the fact that we've been over there, what, now? 10 years.
This is insanity, is it not? "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." A Einstein.
And now we're making friends over in Libya.
The fun just never stops.
Final side note: As I mentioned at Radioman's blog, it seems you don't see or hear anything of the war atrocities over here in our media, either, in spite of the fact that it's a very hot topic around the world right now. Der Speigel describes it as possibly unleashing a "Major Public Backlash".
Funny, I thought our media and reporters were like our health care system---the "best in the world".

MIDDLE EAST—With the Iraq war in its fifth year, the war in Afghanistan in its sixth, and conflict between Israel and the rest of the region continuing unabated for more than half a century, intelligence sources are warning that a new wave of violence in the Middle East may soon blah blah blah, etc. etc., you know the rest.
Yet another act of violence in response to something else terrible that occurred in, oh, let's say Basra.
"Tensions in the region are extremely high," said U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker, who added the same old same old while answering reporters' questions. "We're disappointed by the events of the last few months, but we're confident that we're about to [yakety yakety yak]."
The U.N. has issued a strongly worded whatever denouncing someone or something presumably having to do with the vicious explosive things that raged across this, or shattered the predawn calm of that, or ripped suddenly through the other, killing umpteen innocent civilians in a Jerusalem bus or Beirut discotheque or Fallujah mosque or whatever it was this time.
Either a car bomb killed people or a car hit a roadside bomb, killing people.
In the aftermath of a whole series of incidents, there have also been troubling reports of just fill in the blanks. Middle East experts say the still somehow worsening situation has inflamed age-old sectarian tensions between the Sunnis, Shiites, Semites, Kurds, Turks, Saudis, Persians, Wahhabis, radicals, extremists, Baathists, mullahs, clerics, et al, which is likely to lead to more gurgle-gurgle over the coming weeks and months.
A certain number of U.S. troops were also killed somewhere in some tragic fashion, while a much greater number were wounded. Meanwhile, impoverished or oppressed supporters of whichever faction carried out the attack or ambush probably celebrated, angering an angry U.S. public that is already angry. Locals are calling for an investigation into excessive force or outright corruption by military or political officials on one of the 15 sides of the various conflicts, although the implicated party has categorically denied wrongdoing, just like they always do, without fail, every time this happens, which is daily, it seems.
And in Afghanistan, the Taliban.
In Israel, Palestinians and Israelis escalated tensions and so on and so on ad infinitum, ad eternum, and some say, ad absurdum, and although Hamas released a statement condemning Israeli forces for the resulting civilian deaths, Israeli officials say the teens were armed with rocket launchers, though it doesn't really matter.
Also, Ahmadinejad, Iran's nuclear program, bin Laden at large, Moqtada al-Sadr, Moqtada al-Sadr's militia, Fallujah, renegade mullahs, embedded and/or beheaded journalists, oil revenues, stockpiles of former Soviet armaments, freedom, racism, Halliburton, women's role in Islamic society, the Quran, withdrawing troops, economic disparities, Sikhs, Pakistanis, oil, rebuilding, stories of hope, the Saudi royal family, the Holy Land, insurgents, and the tragedy of Sept. 11th.
In an attempt to increase public support of whatever the fuck it is he thinks he's doing, President Bush trotted out the same old whoop-de-do you've heard over and over at a solemn-yet-resolute speech attended by soldiers, or religious leaders, or firemen, or some mix of ethnic-looking people from one of those countries.
"We have to give this plan time to wop bop a loo bop, a wop bam boom, ah ah ting tang walla walla bing bang," President Bush may as well have said. "May God [help/bless/save] the United States of America."
(Back to yours truly: So the question is, how many hundreds of years are we supposed to give a damn?)
