Right Wing, Republican, "small government" Kansas, loving that big federal money after all

We have, today, ladies and gentlemen, a magnificent example of hypocrisy on a grand scale, coming out of that very Right Wing bastion of Kansas. It was in the Star this morning:

Yesirree, bob, those feisty Kansans, "conservative" as they are, hate "big government" and big government spending and heck, that black man in the White House but when it comes right down to it, they loves them some big money when it's spent on them and/or in their back yard, no doubt about it.

They hate, hate, hate "big government" and want to fight to reduce spending and those big federal government budgets but, "Gosh, you want to spend three-quarters of a billion dollars on little old us??"

"Well, okay."

"Just this once."

From the article, here's the beginning of the hypocrisy:

Republican Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas said the recommendation signals the administration’s support for building the $1.15 billion lab, which will study large animal diseases and develop measures to protect the nation’s food supply.

“We’re not there yet,” Roberts said, “but it’s a milestone.”

But you want the real beauty? You want the pièce de résistance of hypocrisy? Here it is, from the Guv himself:

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, a Republican, said in a statement that the lab “is vital to the security of our country’s food supply, the health of our livestock industry, and growing our state’s economy.”

He said he would work with state lawmakers to secure additional financial commitments from the state, which the budget recommendation anticipates.

Republicans.   Yeah, they're for "small government" all right.   Sure. Got it. Totally, dude.

That ugly, racist chant at KSU last Thursday?

Last week, when Kansas State played Southern Mississippi, the Souther Miss crowd rather famously now chanted out "Where's your green card" at Puerto Rico-born Kansas State guard Angel Rodriguez. As it turns out, there's some "hell to pay": "School president Martha Saunders announced Tuesday that five band members have had their scholarships revoked, have been removed from the band and will have to complete a two-hour cultural sensitivity training course this week." If there's a downside to it, their names weren't released to the public. Personally, I think they deserve some rather public shaming to go along with this punishment but at least they got this. The irony to the whole, ignorant, ugly thing? Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States so Rodriguez diddn't need a green card. Idiots. Racism must end. Little Wildcatter's coloring problem goes viral

First it was in The Kansas City Star (see link below), now it hit the internets and went viral--it's one of the main stories right now on Yahoo! News: Kindergarten K-State fan refuses to color Jayhawk mascot despite teacher’s ire In case you hadn't heard or seen it yet: As reported in detail at Lost Lettermen and the Kansas City Star, 5-year-old Emma Burton of Olathe, Kan., refused to participate in a class coloring assignment when she and her classmates were told to color in a Jayhawk, the mascot of the University of Kansas. The coloring exercise was part of the kindergarten class' celebration of the state of Kansas. Personally, I think she sounds like a bit of a typical, suburban, spoiled brat. On K-State's Bowl Game

Yahoo! Sports shows K-State's bowl game this holiday season--January 6--against Arkansas University as the "Happiest Game" of all the bowl games: "Organizers make no bones about the Cotton Bowl's bid for a call-up from the BCS — they've ditched New Year's Day in the Cotton Bowl itself for a later date in Jerry Jones' $1 billion Holodeck in Arlington — and they've got a BCS-worthy matchup for their trouble: Arkansas and Kansas State are both 10-2, both finished in the top eight of the final BCS standings, and could have easily landed in one of the big-money games themselves if not for a) Finishing third in a division that also includes the two teams squaring off for the BCS championship, and b) Being inexplicably snubbed by the Sugar Bowl in favor of Virginia Tech, respectively. Between them, three of the Razorbacks and Wildcats' four losses came at the hands of the top three teams in every poll; the fourth came against then-No. 11 Oklahoma. The winner is likely headed for its best landing in the final polls in decades, and the Cotton gets to join the Fiesta, Rose and BCS Championship Game as the only games that will host two top-10 teams." Enjoy, y'all. The "Little Apple" hits a high national ranking

Manhattan, Kansas made a major national rating this week, coming up as it did on a list by "MainStreet ("powered by The Street", is says) showing as one of "15 Up-and-Coming Cities". Herewith: 3rd Largest increase in income: Manhattan, Kan. Change in personal income, 2006-2007: 13.7% Looking at change in personal income for the most recent years available, we find Manhattan, Kan., at number three for its 13% increase in that measure. Home to Kansas State University and not much else, Manhattan has won accolades for its desirability as one of the best places to retire young. An abundance of golf courses and cultural activities related to Kansas State have made it a popular choice for those looking for a taste of the good life in rural Kansas. It may only be the eighth largest city in Kansas, but the city’s positive numbers for income are sure to attract even more within its borders. So good on ya', Manhattan. Keep up the good work.
