Entertainment Overnight -- MTM

MTM

She sang, she danced, she did comedy, she did serious drama and acting. She did it all and wonderfully, beautifully.

Thank you for all of it.

You'll be missed. Very missed.

Rest in peace and godspeed to you.

Support NPR! Support Your Local Station!

File:National Public Radio logo.svg

For all those in the Kansas City area, if you listen to the local NPR stationKCUR 89.3 FM and aren't yet a member, PLEASE, PLEASE go here this week and give what you can. As low as $7 per month would be a huge help and very much appreciated. If you can afford more, it would be greatly, greatly appreciated. It's also tax deductible so there's that help, also.

There are so many great programs and such great local, statewide, regional, national and international coverage of news, arts, fantastic music and entertainment! (But you know that).

You can do it by check or credit card. You can also become a sustaining member and have your contribution made monthly by your credit or ATM card.

So, go, please, if you can and would and make your contribution. And thank you, in advance!

Seniors?

Found on Facebook today from someone named Steve Herman:

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently,I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 ...get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you need to ASK for your discount.)
Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too.
This incident prompted me to do some research and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and howsome of them start at the young age of 50. This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family too.
Dunkin Donuts gives free coffee to people over 55. If you're paying for a cup every day, you might want to start getting it for FREE.

Pledge Week on National Public Radio

1) I hate pledge week on National Public Radio but know it's a "necessary evil" and

2) KPR out of Lawrence is a lot less obnoxious in its fundraising than KCUR.

I know you gotta' do what you gotta' do but wow. It's so nice when it's over.

Please, if you do listen, phone in or go online and pledge. The phone numbers and links, both, are at bottom.

And if you don't listen but aren't familiar with it, you might check it out. Between either news or entertainment--or both--you may well enjoy what you hear.

--KCUR, Kansas City phone number: 816.235.5287

Kansas Public Radio, KPR, out of Lawrence and Kansas: 785-864-5268

Not to be forgotten, there is Warrensburg, Missouri's own KTBG, The Bridge, at 90.9 FM: 866.909.2743 (toll free).

The blatant racism on network TV

I know the racism on TV has declined a great deal in the last few decades and it's not nearly as bad as it once was, by any means, but every once in a while, it just slaps you on the face.

Yet another strong example of this was shown to me last evening when I was rather "forced" to watch a couple hours of the somewhat new program "Revenge."

It's mostly about very wealthy people--who also happen to be either very beautiful or very handsome, thanks very much--but what struck me is that on all the time I watched, I saw a total of 3--count 'em, 3--black people or "people of color." And of those 3, two were insignificant, very briefly shown characters. They were two service people. The third, a woman, was a possible female love interest of one of the main male characters. Get this--she was shown only for a very short time toward the end of the show and entire evening, too.

So racism, you're still alive on network programming, it seems, even if you are dying, thank goodness.

We have a way to go yet.

We can do better than this.

Entertainment overnight

Brilliant scenes and images From the video description: "This video features a series of time lapse sequences photographed by the Expedition 30 crew aboard the International Space Station. Set to the song 'Walking in the Air,' by Howard Blake, the video takes viewers around the world, through auroras and over dazzling lightning displays."

Films that could never be remade VII

Back to my original them again. My final--I think--Stanley Kubrick film that can never be remade--"A Clockwork Orange." Talk about a unique film. And while it is both a beautiful film and a probing one--asking questions about what kind of a society we want to be and how do we treat criminals--it's so creative in its look, at the same time. And then there's that music--such great treatment of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. There's nothing like it which, ultimately, was the way all Kubrick's films were. And while it could never be redone, this is one that I also think shouldn't be redone because it's just too gruesome. At least it is for me and some of us out here.
