Watch this, come Monday, February 13

I can't implore you enough to watch this television program, Monday, February 13 on PBS. It is "Slavery by Another Name", based on the book by Douglas A. Blackmon. It's too important. I think most Americans think they know our history. But we don't. We need to know what happened. We need to know how we got here. This is a start. Finally, I think a question needs to be asked. That is, could not, is not the current, modern day situation of the men in African-American families not being around for so many of their wives/girl friends/mothers of their children, possibly, likely an outgrowth, then, of all these black men having been taken, arrested and imprisoned under false pretenses from the Civil War until after World War II? I think the possibility is there. This also is yet one more example of just exactly why we, as a nation and as a people need PBS. No one else would tell this story. Ever since "Monty Python" came out, all those years ago, I was a big, big fan. A friend of mine and I would get together each Saturday night and watch it. Somehow, somehow, I missed this sketch. What a hoot.

Rich (white) guy endorses rich (white) guy

Word is out yesterday that (irrelevant) Donald Trump endorsed Willard "Mitt" Romney for president. La-ti-freakin'-da. As I said above, rich white guy endorses rich white guy. What's additionally funny about this is that Mittens nearly immediately left Florida, after his win there and was said to be heading straight for Michele Bachmann, for her endorsement. Only not so fast Ms. Bachmann announced that she was no way endorsing Mittens--at least yet, anyway, if ever. Then, the Newtster announced earlier that he would be getting "The Donald's" endorsement when--again-- not so fast, "The Donald" comes out declaring for Mittens. What a hoot. Never has so much money looked so disorganized, so, dare I say it? so low class (or white trashy). Seriously, keep the popcorn coming, this is getting really good. Remember the 60's?

Remember the riots of the 60's? 1967, 1968, 1969. Remember those? Watts. Chicago. The 1968 Democratic National Convention riots in Chicago. All those? I would nearly bet that this Summer is going to be full of similar demonstrations and riots nearly nationwide, if not totally. Between the election year and the "Occupy" groups and the general breakdown of different society issues, especially of the very rich vs. the very poor, I expect there will be clashes, almost certainly. Cities are already changing their laws so they can act more forcefully against demonstrations. That, and watch Europe, too. With Greece's likely default on their debt and both the extreme debts across Europe, along with deep cuts in so many public programs, look for demonstrations and riots to break out all across Europe, too. I think it is likely to be the 2nd "long, hot Summer." We shall see. I'd be happy--very happy--to be mistaken.

The incredibly badly named "Right to Work" laws

Let's get something clear today. The "right to work" is a good thing. The right to work as Wikipedia so eloquenty writes "is the concept that people have a human right to work, or engage in productive employment, and may not be prevented from doing so. The right to work is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognized in international human rights law through its inclusion in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, where the right to work emphasizes economic, social and cultural development."

But what the "right to work" is not, it is not even remotely even like the "Right to Work Law" or any Right to Work Law. It is a misnomer--it is badly, even deceptively, named. The "Right to Work Law", as was signed into law yesterday in Indiana, unfortunately is "a statute that prohibits agreements between labor unions and employers that make membership, payment of union dues, or fees a condition of employment, either before or after hiring." See that? Did you read that? The "Right to Work Laws" are laws that take power AWAY from you and I. Don't be confused, folks. I think the average person on the street figures the "Right to Work Law" sounds like a good--maybe even great--thing that we need to support. It is anything but. It is from and by and for the corporations and owners and wealthy to keep you and me from organizing and from having any power in the workplace. It's not good. Far from it. So don't be confused, folks. Don't let the language or title confuse you. The "right to work" is a good thing, sure. A "Right to Work Law" stinks. It's lousy. I don't think most Americans know the distinction. Let's get this word out and keep things clear. It seems there is a grade school class that has proposed to the Kansas State legislature that they make the Cairn Terrier the State dog since, obviously, it is the breed of dog Toto was in "The Wizard of Oz." Personally, I'm stunned. I can't believe someone--an adult, a child, someone--didn't think of this sometime in the last 50 or more years since the film was famously released in 1939. I mean, state legislators have nothing else to do--right?--and usually have the creativity and thoughtfulness of....well, I'll stop there. KC Chiefs Assistant Coach retiring hits Yahoo! Sports News too

It seems Kansas City and Missouri got a two-fer overnight, from Yahoo! News. First, first round draft pick Dorial Green-Beckham's picking Mizzou hit (see previous post) and now, this: Chiefs offensive coordinator Muir retires KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)— Longtime NFL assistant coach Bill Muir followed through on his plans to retire, informing the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday that he wouldn’t return for a 35th season in the league.

Muir joined the Chiefs in 2009 as offensive line coach under Todd Haley, and was elevated to offensive coordinator last season. But the Chiefs struggled with injuries and inconsistency, which resulted in the firing of Haley and the hiring of Romeo Crennel as head coach. The 69-year-old Muir is considered one of the best offensive line coaches in football, though he wasn’t expected to remain as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator if he stayed on the staff. Dorial Green-Beckham's Mizzou pick hits Yahoo! News bigtime

Right now, on the overnight of Yahoo! News, Springfield's own Dorial Green-Beckham's pick of Mizzou as where he wanted to go play football is one of their top stories, for what it's worth. And face it, for this window of time, with Mr. Green-Beckham being rated the number one draft, it is big.

Thank God for Newt Gingrich!

What else can you say at this point but thank God for Newt Gingrich? First, he's divisive as heck. For everyone out there in the Republican Party and in the Right Wing who is all "No way I'm voting for Mitt Romney", they have their man. Second, he's got ideas that are off the wall, like the idea of going back to the moon and colonizing within his first 4 years of office (don't make me choke). That's a good one. Third---and I'll stop there--there's his monumental ego and that let's him off the hook for what a sexist he is. So he loses last night in Florida to Mittens but is he going to quit? HECK NO. The Newster is in this, likely, until at least March, if not all the way to the Republican National Convention (here's hoping). As if President Obama and the Democrats don't have enough ammunition to go after the eventual nominee but with this, he'll have even more. And Ron Paul? Quit? Doubtful. That will just add more divisiveness and internal strife to the party and for the Tea Party members and who knows? It should add some trouble for the Libertarians and Independents, too. So good on you, Newt Gingrich! You just stay in there fighting your "good fight." Stay on your own principle. It just makes it that much better for our side.
