This Article Out of Australia Should Hurt and Concern Every American

Why is our natural tendency to assume that

We are witnessing the fall of a great power

A bit, but most, of the article:

Tragically, American exceptionalism - 'we are the first and best democracy on Earth' - contributes to the self-delusion of indestructibility. There is nothing automatically self-correcting in US democracy.

Look at the US now. Its president is so psychiatrically disordered with narcissism that he is incapable of dealing with the COVID-19 crisis in a coherent, empathetic way. Everything he says and does is through a prism of himself. He has now turned his whole re-election campaign into one of race hate, law and order and a bizarre invention of a threat from "left-wing fascists".

But worse, the US seems to have a national self-delusion that once Trump loses and is gone, everything will return to normal. The delusion extends to a belief that the COVID-19-stricken economy will bounce back to normal in a V shape.

Trump is as much just a symptom of the underlying rottenness as an integral part of it, even if his sucking up to authoritarian leaders in Russia, China and North Korea is unprecedented.

The underlying weakness in present US democracy is that partisanship has become so extreme that the nation is incapable of dealing with the major issues that face it. COVID-19 has illustrated that starkly, with every word and act predicated on party allegiance. Meanwhile, other problems like race, police violence, gun control, inequality, the health system, climate change and energy policy go unattended.

The motives of "the other side" are routinely vilified without evidence. The Democrats are blamed for everything. The Republicans can do no wrong. And to a lesser extent, vice versa. My side of politics, right or wrong.

In a vicious cause-and-effect circle, the imperative of winning at all costs corrodes the political process, and the corroded political process makes winning at all costs even more imperative.

The Trump presidency has made all this worse, but the seeds were there long before. He has appointed incompetent ignorant toadies to the most senior positions in his cabinet and the bureaucracy. He has undermined the Supreme Court with appointments based on politics, not law.

For a long time, the electoral process has been corrupted by state governors drawing unfair electoral boundaries so that the Republican Party is grossly over-represented in Congress compared to its vote, and has won the presidency twice this century with a minority of the vote.

The electoral process has also been corrupted by runaway bribery through political donations.

Another vicious circle has emerged. The politicised Supreme Court from 2010 on has refused to control corporate and individual political donations - thus favouring the Republicans.

Donations from billionaires, mainly to the Republicans, consequently boomed from just $17 million in 2008 to $611 million in 2018 - and rising. This results in policies more skewed to the wealthy and conservatives, and therefore greater inequality. These policies include engaging in wars in remote places where the only real US interests are those of war profiteers. In turn, these policies result in more donations from billionaires, who get repaid manyfold, and who now have as much if not more control of the process than voters.

Tragically, American exceptionalism - "we are the first and best democracy on Earth" - contributes to the self-delusion of indestructibility. There is nothing automatically self-correcting in US democracy. Even the so-called checks and balances are not working - they are causing gridlock, rather than adding a bit of mild caution to a system that is overall supposed to be geared to problem-solving, not political point-scoring.

The system has become so warped that those disenfranchised, disempowered and disenchanted are taking to the streets, questioning the legitimacy of the whole system.

The only question is whether the taking to the streets can break these vicious circles, or whether it is just another step in the decline and fall of a great power.

If that doesn't give any adult American pause, I don't know what would or will.

I say again.

Thanks, Mr. President.

Thanks, Republicans.

Oh, Happy Day! Hope For and In America

We Missourians got a pretty huge, very unexpected "two-fer Tuesday" yesterday.

A racist got fired from her own TV show and an extramarital sex blackmailing Missouri Governor had to resign from his job, all on the same day.

All in all, a great, if unexpected day.  Enough to give a person hope for us.

Next up? The Orange Man? And his entire administration?

Hey. We can hope.

Have a great day, y'all.

Think happy thoughts.

Very happy thoughts.

American Exceptionalism

We are the only Western, industrialized nation where there are this many mass shootings and these numbers of innocent civilians killed.

We are the only Western, industrialized nation that ties health care to profit.

We are the only Western, industrialized nation that has not just some but lots of people declaring bankruptcy due to medical expenses. Medical expenses are, in fact, the number one cause of bankruptcies in the United States.

Both, profit over people.

We put profit and profits before people.

This Headline Hurts

So I was on Facebook, just scrolling through posts and suddenly I saw one with a headline from an article published out of the UK. This one:

Decline and fall:

how American society unravelled

And damn.

That hurt.

That hurts.

With Trump President, I've been hoping this is just a swerve, a bump in our road to and of progress, you know? Just a brief mistake, if, yes, more than just slight.

But then, you look at the already-wealthy and corporations of the nation, firmly in control, creating more and yet more ways to shovel money their way since they own the Republican Party, at minimum. And you look at the way the NRA owns them and so, runs America, getting and keeping far too many weapons out there in the nation, on our streets. People being shot and lots killed, needlessly.

Then there's the opioid crisis, killing thousands of Americans and all because Big Pharma also has their sway with our government and so, us.

And now, this President Trump putting more and yet more science deniers in charge all over our government, in the EPA and at NASA, etc. Then putting people from the big banks in offices to support the banks and not the people, not protecting the people, you and I.

Then China has stepped up on the international politics and leadership field since there's a yawning gap of leadership with The Orange One in the White House.

I think, maybe they're right.

I still hope they're wrong but maybe we have, in fact, already begun to slike, as a nation and society and "great power."

Damn.

Our best days behind us?

No longer the world's leading power and "beacof light", "beacon of hope"?

Damn.

To That America, We Wish Happy Birthday

To the country that values citizenry over consumerism,
that values liberty over enslavement,
that values equal opportunities for all,
that values the health of one equal to the health of another,
that learned that separate is not equal,
that put a man on the moon,
that separated church from state in order that church could be that much more available,
that helped free the world from Nazi tyranny and
proudly had women build the machines that did it,
that invented the blues,
that overcame pitting brother against brother in order to break the evil of slavery,
that exported rock and roll,
that put storytelling on the big screen,
that gave us Fred Astaire,
that gave Einstein a home,
that has a statue in the harbor welcoming the downtrodden,
that figured out burgers and shakes go so well together,
that wrote the social contract that has yet to be beaten that begins "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal..."

....to THAT America, we wish a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Quote of the Day -- On This President

And ironically, look who said it.

"Trump's behavior is not just beneath the dignity of the Presidency, but that of any decent man. Every day, I'm presented with someone who acts inappropriately. Why would anyone think that behavior belongs in the White House?"

-- Jerry Springer, June 30, 2017

Let's never forget. We have Republicans and the Right Wing to thank for this boob of a President and his ugliness, clumsilness, mistakes and ignorance.

American History for Black History Month from 1965

I wasn't aware of this debate or film clip until last evening. I didn't know James Baldwin debated the very Right Wing, Conservative William F. Buckley at all, on any subject, let alone this one. And the topic was "Is the American Dream at the expense of the American Negro?"

My response is that not only is and has the American Dream been at the expense of the American "Negro", the African-Americans, the Blacks, but it has been built on their backs, figuratively and literally.

Historic debate between James Baldwin v. William F. Buckley Jr. at Cambridge University.

Far too few Americans have seen this video or know of this debate. Far too will, I feel sure, sadly and unfortunately.

America, Who You Are, In Three Statistics

Inline image 1

America, I don't think you know who you are.

Oh, sure, you kind of know but I don't think you're really looking at yourself and seeing who and what you are.

So with that in mind, America, Americans, I give you three--just three--statistics, just three facts that really show who you are, what you support and what you're about. Forsooth:

Number one.  Health care.

Our health care and health care system is, far and away, the most expensive health care system in the world, bar none.

For all we pay, we have lousy health and even extremely poor health outcomes.

Of the top 17 industrialized nations, we have the worst mortality rates. Translation: We die sooner than the 16 nations before us on that list.

Second, number two of our statistics, on top of all that spending and costs, we are ranked number 31, in 31st place in life expectancy, internationally. Check it out.

Of the 30 nations ahead of us on this list of life expectancy, all have universal health care. Imagine that. Oh, yeah, and most are---GASP--SOCIALIST nations. Heaven forbid, right?

Third and finally, there is this statistic and fact, America. Again, this is who you are.

These, my fellow Americans, are your--our--priorities.

Sure, we bemoan our students and schools failing and sure, we lament our health care is outrageously high--so high we can't afford it and that it's also the number one cause of bankruptcy in the nation. And yes, we don't have enough money, we think and say, for our roads and bridges and highways and sewers and airports and infrastructure or anything else, really, but BY GOD, WE HAVE BILLIONS AND TRILLIONS FOR "DEFENSE"! Nobody has more money for bombs and jets and warships or blows things up better than us.

So there you go, America. In three quick little "nutshells", so to speak, this is who and what you are.

Apparently, you think this is all not just a good idea but that it's also somehow sustainable.

Dear America: Now That That's Over...

An open letter to America.

Dear America,

Now that that's over, now that Donald J. Trump was (soundly, roundly and decidedly) defeated in this presidential election, it's important, very important, that we all, all of us, come back to sanity and logic and kindness and intelligence and discernment and rationality and all things good and true and compassionate and back away from anything and everything he stood for.

All the racism and sexism and misogyny and bullying and emotion and every negative, ugly thing he represented.

All of it.

Let's all come back, away from the ledge of negativity and even ugliness he too often presented.

Let's all come back to civility and cooperation and working together and being Americans. Again, together.

And let's demand our government office holders do the same. No more "party first", people and "nation be damned."

It's not us vs. them.

Let's do this.

Let's work together for the benefit of all of us. For the benefit of America.  Heck, for humankind and all the world.

Let's be and stay the United States of America. No matter our political party or leanings, let's be Americans first and go from there, from our problems, together, to solutions.

Sincerely and very truly yours,

All of us.

(Note:  This was written on the afternoon of October 20, 2016, the night after the third and final presidential campaign debate).
