Quote of the Day -- On Leadership

The New York Times has an excellent article and interview posted yesterday by Thomas Friedman,  He interviewed a friend, Dov Seidman, founder and chairman of the ethics and compliance company LRN and the How Institute for Society, which promotes values-based leadership.

The quote:

"Great leaders trust people with the truth. And they make hard decisions guided by values and principles, not just politics, popularity or short-term profits. Great leaders understand that when so many vulnerable and scared people are so willing, so quickly, to put their livelihoods and even their lives in their leaders’ hands, and make sacrifices asked of them, they expect the truth and nothing but the truth in return. Leaders who trust people with the truth are trusted more in return. But you better not betray my trust — by not telling me the truth — when I have literally put my life in your hands...

...The leaders we will remember from this crisis are those who put more shared truth into our world, not muddied it. And those who put more trust into our world and not eroded it."

Would that we had such leadership today, especially from Washington and the White House.

The Liar Tweets Tonight

If you don't follow or aren't familiar with Roy Zimmerman, he does satire, mostly political satire, on YouTube. This is, to me at least, what I think is his best, most appropriate, hilarious, if sad because it's true, work yet.

Again, God help us all.

Be well, y'all. Stay well. Stay at home.

Quote of the Day -- On Money

Just ran across this today.

Post image

Psalm 49

1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world,
2 both low and high, rich and poor alike:
3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.
4 I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle:
5 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me—
6 those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches?
7 No one can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for them—
8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough—
9 so that they should live on forever and not see decay.
10 For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others.
11 Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.
12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish.
13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings.
14 They are like sheep and are destined to die; death will be their shepherd (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning). Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions.
15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.
16 Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases;
17 for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them.
18 Though while they live they count themselves blessed— and people praise you when you prosper—
19 they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life.
20 People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.

Irony Much?

Hypocrisy much?

Could We Have a Watchdog For All That Cornoavirus Cash?

All this Covid-19 pandemic money seems to be unleashing the worst of the Republicans in Congress and even this President.

Post image

"It's simply bizarre and unconscionable that the Trump administration would have United manage billions in relief to hospitals."

Some of the article:

Watchdog groups and healthcare advocates are raising serious concerns about conflicts of interest and corporate profiteering after the Trump White House tapped UnitedHealth Group—the largest private health insurer in the U.S.—to help distribute billions of dollars in taxpayer funds to hospitals struggling to cope with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Trump administration earlier this month awarded UnitedHealth with a contract to "expedite" hospital relief money authorized under the CARES Act, a massive stimulus package President Donald Trump signed into law last month.

Politico reported over the weekend that the White House's choice to empower UnitedHealth to oversee the large sum of taxpayer funds "surprised many in healthcare, including employees at the Department of Health and Human Services who had assumed that HHS would administer the program itself."
Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington (CREW), a government watchdog group, said Tuesday that the Trump administration's deal with UnitedHealth "raises serious red flags."

"In a rush to respond to the pandemic, we can't let ethics issues go unaddressed while taxpayer dollars go out the door."

But wait.  It gets worse...

...Stephen Parente, a senior economist at the White House Council of Economic Advisers, is one of the officials tasked with managing the hospital relief funds. As Politico noted, Parente has financial ties to UnitedHealth.

"As a Minnesota-based health economist before joining the Trump administration, Parente served as a consultant to companies including UnitedHealth, which has also backed some of his non-profit activities," Politico reported. "Five months after President Donald Trump nominated Parente to an HHS post overseeing health insurers in 2017, UnitedHealth donated a $1.2 million multi-year grant to a small research center that Parente directed and helped found at the University of Minnesota."

Wendell Potter, a former insurance executive turned Medicare for All advocate, tweeted late Tuesday that "nothing my old industry does shocks me—but this is close." Potter said he has "never heard of anything like this" and warned that the involvement of UnitedHealth raises serious alarm bells, despite the company's vow not to profit from the arrangement.

"UHC execs are canceling contracts with doctors and raking in millions, during a pandemic," Potter wrote. "And now, the Trump admin is having them manage a multi-billion dollar pot of relief aid?!"

For more on this Covid-19 pandemic money and the corruption that this Congress and President are allowing, see here:

Then check out this little beauty.

Meanwhile, the big banks certainly appreciate the coronavirus bailout.

This one is probably supposed to make us all feel better.

Here's a good question at least Forbes Magazine is asking though I doubt anyone else will.

For yet more unbelievability, there is this.

Can you imagine what the Republicans would have said or done if the previous President even came close to something like this, above?

But then, this is the President who politically survived this.

This Republican Party President of the United States was caught actually taking money from a charity, for Veterans, no less, and putting it in his own campaign cash and he's still President.
God help us all.

Happy? Earth Day at 50

Happy Earth Day, indeed.

Good luck to us all.

Two--Big--Reasons Donald Trump Is In Electoral Trouble

Yes sir, ladies and gentlemen, there are two big, big reasons why this very Republican Party President is in trouble--big trouble--in this election year, regarding his possible re-election.

Post image

Here's the first.

US President Trump no longer pushing the US economy

The one thing, the one thing this President had going for him, if even that, was the economy, of course. And even that was largely handed to him, as all Presidents are, from the previous administration. Now, with this national and international, deadly, killing pandemic and the necessary stay at home orders across much of the nation and world, he certainly doesn't have that.

And the second thing now going against this President? Glad you asked. This came out today.

Oops.

Sure, there's his maybe 30% of the nation or less that are his followers, if that isn't shrinking, but the majority of us, most of the nation see through this empty charlatan and emotional blamer.

These two, Mr. and Mrs. America, are the one-two punches that make this President very to extremely unlikely for re-election this year, this Fall. And his repeated emotional tirades at press conferences, lashing out at reporters and his tweet storms, online, don't help him. Not one bit. In spite of what he apparently thinks or wants.

And thank goodness.

Vote, folks. Come November, the 3rd, vote.

And vote blue.

My one big concern, however, is that, between now and our November election and this President's reckoning day, I hope he can take the pressure and rejection that seems to be--deservedly--coming his way.

God help us all.

Quotes of the Day -- On Religion

Religious symbols

"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."
--Napoleon Bonaparte

"Men will never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."
--Denis Diderot

"This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness."
--Dalai Lama

Finally, I had never seen this one but suddenly, it's another favorite:

"Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions."
--Jerry Falwell

Go in peace.

Have a nice day.

Is This President Losing It?

The reason I ask the question in the title:

Post image

This, ladies and gentlemen, seems clearly to be one more way in which this President has become and is showing himself to be dangerous. Dangerous at least to the nation. At least.

Some from the article:

It’s only mid-April...and President Donald Trump is already accusing Democrats of “trying to steal the election out from under [him].

It seems he sent out a fund raising letter today saying "the Democrats are trying to steal the Election" from him.

Conservative writer David Frum said it so rightly, too, in response:

"Five months from the voting, @realDonaldTrump is explicitly accusing the Democrats of trying to steal the election from him. He will ramp this up so that by Election Day his supporters will not believe any result other than his reelection is legitimate.

The rest of the brief article:

As with many Trump statements, it’s a futile and counterproductive exercise to try to debunk it in full, but he (okay, his campaign’s digital fundraising staffer) is referring to a push, mainly by Democrats, to expand absentee voting access before the fall. In case you haven’t heard, there’s a global pandemic that’s shut down life as we know it in the United States, and turned the act of in-person-voting—or working at a voting precinct—into a life-threatening proposition. Wouldn’t it be nice to vote without dying? And some states, such as California, Oregon, and Washington, already make it possible for anyone to cast their vote by mail—in fact they’ve been doing it a long time with no real issues or fraud. (Incidentally, there was a big case of absentee-ballot fraud in 2018—which ended in a do-over election and the indictment of a Republican campaign worker.)

Trump’s full of bluster, but let’s not lose sight how insane this is. The sitting president is accusing his opponents of “trying to steal” the election simply because they want to make sure people are able to vote safely in a pandemic—and he’s doing it just to raise money....

A frightening man in a potentially frightening time. God, Gods, Heaven and the heavens help us all, from now to November.

I think there is every indication this President will do and say anything and everything from now to election day in order to get re-elected, nation and people be damned.

Dangerous, indeed.

Vote blue, folks.

This President Has Now Become Dangerous, Part II

Further proof, if you haven 't already seen or heard it, that this Republican Party President, Donald Trump, is, in face, beyond his now-usual reckless but become dangerous, no overstatement.

Post image

Federal law bans advocating the overthrow of government

What he did yesterday.

President Trump incited insurrection Friday against the duly elected governors of the states of Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia. Just a day after issuing guidance for re-opening America that clearly deferred decision-making to state officials — as it must under our Constitutional order — the president undercut his own guidance by calling for criminal acts against the governors for not opening fast enough.

Trump tweeted, “LIBERATE MINNESOTA!” followed immediately by “LIBERATE MICHIGAN!” and then “LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!” This follows Wednesday’s demonstration in Michigan, in which armed protestors surrounded the state capitol building in Lansing chanting “Lock her up!” in reference to Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and “We will not comply,” in reference to her extension of the state’s coronavirus-related stay-at-home order. Much smaller and less-armed groups had on Thursday protested on the state capitol grounds in Richmond, Va., and outside the governor’s mansion in St. Paul, Minn.

This President has been a lot of things these past 3 years, most of them reckless, ill-advised, wrong, impetuous---a lot of things. But with this, as with, as I wrote here earlier, his call to de-fund the World Health Organization during this most deadly pandemic in the last 100 years, with this he has now become dangerous.

Literally dangerous.

At least we have this from yesterday.

And this, today. Even this Republican Governor agrees with us.

He's never been popular, overall, period but at least we have this.  He doesn't know it but he does damage to himself.

Some hope.

Be well. Stay safe. Stay home.

With This Pandemic, President Trump Has Now Officially, Publicly Become Dangerous, Part I

So this President Trump said the World Health Organization, the WHO, didn't advise us soon enough and they misrepresented things? Then, in the middle of this worst, most deadly, killing pandemic in the last 100 years, cut their funding from us, the US.  Here's proof he's wrong. So very, very wrong.

Post image

First of all, here's what he did.

“It would have been so easy to be truthful.”

Thus spake President Trump this week on the very day he surpassed the milestone of uttering 18,000 falsehoods during his presidency, as tallied by the Post’s Fact Checker.

But on this day, Trump was not admitting to losing his own struggle with the truth. He was accusing the World Health Organization of “covering up the spread of the coronavirus” and failing to “share information in a timely and transparent fashion.” He declared he was cutting off funding for the world’s public health body in the middle of a pandemic.

The next day he called the WHO a “tool of China” and floated the vile conspiracy theory that the WHO deliberately concealed the danger of the virus: “There’s something going on” at the WHO “that’s very bad,” and "I have a feeling they knew exactly what was going on.”

This is not merely a falsehood. This is a damnable and murderous lie.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is all the proof to show this President is wrong.

From NPR.

On Tuesday, President Trump said he's suspending U.S. funding for the World Health Organization. He said the agency has "mismanaged" the pandemic, has been slow to respond to the crisis and is "China-centric."

We looked at the public record to see what Trump and the WHO had to say over the past 15 weeks about the coronavirus pandemic. Here's a timeline highlighting key quotes.

Jan. 5

The WHO reported a "pneumonia of unknown cause" in Wuhan, China.

The health organization advised against restrictions to China: "WHO advises against the application of any travel or trade restrictions on China based on the current information available on this event."

Jan. 9

The WHO released a statement announcing the source of the disease: "Chinese authorities have made a preliminary determination of a novel (or new) coronavirus, identified in a hospitalized person with pneumonia in Wuhan."

It added: "In the coming weeks, more comprehensive information is required to understand the current status and epidemiology of the outbreak, and the clinical picture."

Jan. 14

WHO officials gave conflicting signals about whether there is human-to-human transmission. At a press conference in Geneva, Maria Van Kerkhove of WHO's emerging diseases unit told a Reuters reporter: "From the information that we have it is possible that there is limited human-to-human transmission, potentially among families, but it is very clear right now that we have no sustained human-to-human transmission." However, that same day WHO tweeted a different take, stating that "Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China" and also told an NPR reporter that Van Kerkhove had been misunderstood and there was in fact no evidence of human-to-human transmission.

Jan. 22

Asked by CNBC whether there were any concerns about the virus spreading to the U.S., Trump responded: "We have it totally under control. It's one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It's going to be just fine."

Jan. 23

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement that it was too early to declare the coronavirus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. "Make no mistake. This is an emergency in China, but it has not yet become a global health emergency. It may yet become one."

Jan. 24

In a tweet, Trump praised China for its efforts to prevent the spread of the virus. "China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!"

Jan. 29

Dr. Mike Ryan, head of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, said, "The whole world needs to be on alert now. The whole world needs to take action and be ready for any cases that come from the epicenter or other epicenter that becomes established."

Jan. 30

At a campaign rally in Iowa, Trump talked about the U.S. partnership with China to control the disease. "We only have five people. Hopefully, everything's going to be great. They have somewhat of a problem, but hopefully, it's all going to be great. But we're working with China, just so you know, and other countries very, very closely. So it doesn't get out of hand."

Tedros announced that the outbreak had become a "public health emergency of international concern over the global outbreak of novel coronavirus."

Feb. 2

In an interview with Sean Hannity, Trump said, "We pretty much shut it down coming in from China." His executive order banning anyone who has been in China in the previous 14 days — with exceptions, including for U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents and their close family members — went into effect.

Feb. 4

At a WHO briefing, Tedros urged that there be no travel bans. "We reiterate our call to all countries not to impose restrictions that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade. Such restrictions can have the effect of increasing fear and stigma, with little public health benefit. ... Where such measures have been implemented, we urge that they are short in duration, proportionate to the public health risks and are reconsidered regularly as the situation evolves."

Feb. 10

At a campaign rally in Manchester, N.H., Trump said: "Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope that's true. But we're doing great in our country. China, I spoke with President Xi, and they're working very, very hard. And I think it's going to all work out fine."

Feb. 11

At a WHO briefing, Tedros urged world leaders to give priority to containing the virus: "To be honest, a virus is more powerful in creating political, economic and social upheaval than any terrorist attack. A virus can have more powerful consequences than any terrorist action, and that's true. If the world doesn't want to wake up and consider this enemy virus as Public Enemy Number 1, I don't think we will learn our lessons."

Feb. 13

In an interview with Geraldo Rivera, Trump characterized the threat of the virus in the U.S. by saying: "In our country, we only have, basically, 12 cases, and most of those people are recovering and some cases fully recovered. So it's actually less."

Feb. 24

In a tweet, Trump wrote, "The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!"

Feb. 26

In a news conference, Trump said: "When you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that's a pretty good job we've done."

Feb. 28

The WHO raises the global risk of the coronavirus from "high" to "very high."

March 5

In a WHO briefing, Tedros praised China and the U.S. for taking "the right approach." He said: "After our visit to Beijing and seeing China's approach, and President Xi leading that, and also in the U.S., President Trump himself, and also for regular coordination, designating the vice president. These are the approaches we're saying are the right ones, and these are the approaches we're saying are going to mobilize the whole government."

In a Fox News town hall, Trump said, "It's going to all work out. Everybody has to be calm. It's all going to work out."

March 10

In a meeting with Republican senators at the U.S. Capitol, Trump said, "This was unexpected. ... And it hit the world. And we're prepared, and we're doing a great job with it. And it will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away."

March 11

Trump said in an Oval Office address: "The vast majority of Americans, the risk is very, very low."

Tedros said the WHO had "made the assessment that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic."

March 16

"You cannot fight a fire blindfolded. And we cannot stop this pandemic if we don't know who is infected," Tedros said at a briefing in Geneva. He added, "We have a simple message for all countries: test, test, test. Test every suspected case."

At a press briefing, Trump issued orders to control the spread of the virus in the U.S.: "My administration is recommending that all Americans, including the young and healthy, work to engage in schooling from home when possible. Avoid gathering in groups of more than 10 people. Avoid discretionary travel. And avoid eating and drinking at bars, restaurants and public food courts. If everyone makes this change or these critical changes and sacrifices now, we will rally together as one nation and we will defeat the virus. And we're going to have a big celebration all together. With several weeks of focused action, we can turn the corner and turn it quickly."

March 17

Trump told reporters: "This is a pandemic. ... I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic."

March 21

Trump tweeted about potential coronavirus treatments: "HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & AZITHROMYCIN, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine. The FDA has moved mountains - Thank You! Hopefully they will BOTH (H works better with A, International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents)....."

March 23

In a WHO briefing, Tedros said, "Using untested medicines without the right evidence could raise false hope and even do more harm than good."

He also said that the "pandemic is accelerating. ... It took 67 days from the first reported case to reach the first 100,000 cases, 11 days for the second 100,000 cases and just four days for the third 100,000 cases."

March 24

Trump said: "Easter is a very special day for me. And I see it sort of in that timeline that I'm thinking about. And I say, wouldn't it be great to have all of the churches full?"

March 26

"We are at war with a virus that threatens to tear us apart," said Tedros to world leaders in a special virtual summit on the COVID-19 pandemic.

April 6

Dr. Mike Ryan, head of the WHO's Health Emergencies Programme, said you can't lift a lockdown all at once. "You need to say, 'We will stop doing this element of the shutdown, and then we will wait, and we will look at the data. If that works, we go to the next stage and the next stage.' So a careful, calibrated stepwise exit from lockdown."

April 7

Trump criticized the WHO for mishandling the pandemic. "The WHO really blew it. For some reason, funded largely by the United States, yet very China-centric. We will be giving that a good look. Fortunately, I rejected their advice on keeping our borders open to China early on. Why did they give us such a faulty recommendation?"

April 8

"Please don't politicize this virus," Tedros said in a briefing in Geneva after he was asked about Trump's remarks the day before. He later urged political leaders to "please quarantine politicizing COVID."

April 14

"Today I am instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization's role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus," Trump said in a briefing at the White House.

April 15

"We regret the decision of the president of the United States to order a halt in funding to the World Health Organization," said Tedros at a news conference.

Responding to the U.S. accusations, Ryan of the WHO said, "In the first weeks of January, the WHO was very, very clear."

"We alerted the world on January the 5th," Ryan said. "Systems around the world, including the U.S., began to activate their incident management systems on January the 6th. And through the next number of weeks, we've produced multiple updates to countries, including briefing multiple governments, multiple scientists around the world, on the developing situation — and that is what it was, a developing situation."

In an interview with NPR that will air on April 16, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, stated: "[The World Health Organization] was not accurate. Had it been accurate, it would have slowed the virus and saved thousands of lives."

Jason Beaubien, Pien Huang, Ben de la Cruz, Isabella Gomez Sarmiento, Domenico Montanaro and Barbara Van Woerkom contributed to this report.

This President Trump has repeatedly been reckless and cavalier with facts.

With cutting funding to the WHO during this once in a lifetime, again, killing, deadly pandemic, he has become dangerous.

It's as I said some time ago. Richard Nixon had nothing on this guy.

We need to vote this guy, this President, out come November. Him and all who support him.

Further proof of his being dangerous later today, in my next post at 3 pm Central here.

Quote of the Day -- From This President

What we're dealing with now.

Post image

REPORTER: I wanted to ask you specifically about one industry in particular, and that’s food-processing plants. Is there a priority to get testing at food-processing plants all across the country?

This Republican Party President: "Well, you’re asking that because of what happened — it’s a fair question, too — what happened in Denver. Because in Denver, I’ve never seen — I said, “What’s going on?” We’re looking at this graph where everything’s looking beautiful and it’s coming down and then you got this one spike. It’s — I said, 'What happened to Denver?'

And many people, very quickly, and they — by the way, they were on it like, so fast, you wouldn’t believe it. They knew every aspect. They had people go and — not only testing, 'Who did you see? Where were you? How many people did you meet? Were you out to dinner in somebody else’s home? Where were you?' Where did — where did this number of people come from? How did — they are totally on it.

Now, this just happened. I just saw it this morning. I’m looking at everything smooth, going down, topping out. And then you have this one spike in Denver. It’s like, where did this come from?
So we’ll be looking at that. And we don’t want cases like that happening. This was — but this — this is the kind of thing can happen. This is very complex.

This is a very brilliant enemy. You know, it’s a brilliant enemy. They develop drugs like the antibiotics. You see it. Antibiotics used to solve every problem. Now one of the biggest problems the world has is the germ has gotten so brilliant that the antibiotic can’t keep up with it. And they’re constantly trying to come up with a new — people go to a hospital and they catch — they go for a heart operation — that’s no problem, but they end up dying from — from problems. You know the problems I’m talking about. There’s a whole genius to it.

We’re fighting — not only is it hidden, but it’s very smart. Okay? It’s invisible and it’s hidden, but it’s — it’s very smart. And you see that in a case like a Denver.

But, you know, I think we’re doing well, and they’re on Denver like you wouldn’t believe. I came in this morning; it was a flurry. I said what’s going on? They said, “Denver.” I said, “What happened to Denver?” Because Denver was doing pretty well. And they’ve got that under control. But, yeah, that would be a case where you do some very big testing."

First, what the absolute heck?

Second, who talks like this?  What adult talks like this?

Not even third graders talk like this, let alone adults. Let alone the leaders of nations. Let alone the leader of what is supposed to be the head of nations. Let alone what is supposed to be the wealthiest of nations.

Thanks, Republicans!

Seriously. Honestly. God help us.  Get us to November.

Now This President Wants to Adjourn Both Chambers of Congress--So He Can Stack the Courts

And now this Republican Party Gestapo agent--President Donald J Trump, in case you've been buried in sand for 3 years, wants to actually adjourn BOTH CHAMBERS OF CONGRESS so he can stack the courts with yet more Right Wing, no doubt inexperienced judges. He actually said it.

Post image

What part of this is not Fascist?

fascism
[ˈfaSHˌizəm]

NOUN
an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization.

synonyms:
authoritarianism · totalitarianism · dictatorship · despotism · autocracy · absolute rule · Nazism · rightism · militarism · nationalism · xenophobia · racism · anti-Semitism

(in general use) extreme authoritarian, oppressive, or intolerant views or practices.

We're in the middle of a killing, international pandemic that, by the way, has most of the nation rightly shut down so we don't spread the virus and he declares he wants to, again, adjourn both houses of Congress so he can stack the courts.

Oh, and his claim yesterday that the WHO, the World Health Organization, didn't notify us all, the world, that there was a pandemic out there and that they were irresponsible so we should actually cut their funding---in the middle of this pandemic?

So much for that claim. Not this his followers and supporters will agree or understand or accept this.

Naturally, this President didn't do his homework. "The Constitution does grant the power to adjourn the House and Senate, but only if the two chambers are in disagreement over when to adjourn, which is not currently the case." (With thanks to Gabe Fleisher at "Wake Up to Politics" for that last bit).

Not done there, check this out.

Now even his own, our own CIA is saying ignore this President.

God help us.

And thanks, Republicans! Thanks again. So much. That's quite the guy you've foisted on us all, on the nation.

Must-See Articles on this President

Post image

Yes, here are some, what I would call "must-see" articles on this President that broke in the last day or two.

First, letters to the Editor at The New York Times:

“The case can be made that, among industrialized countries, the United States has had the worst overall response,” a reader writes.

And that writer isn't just any writer out there but a microbiologist, formerly with the Environmental Protection Agency. And that's just the first letter.

Then there is this:

Even Ann Coulter, uber Right Wing and conservative, very Republican Party Ann Coulter, of all people is not just against Donald J Trump but publicly calls him an idiot.

What's not to love about that?

And not just Ann Coulter but more Republicans are irritated by Mr. Trump.

Next up, in response to his assertion that his power as President, is absolute:

Seems he didn't want to tell each and every state governor what to do individually on "stay at home" orders but now that we're considering taking them off, Mr. Trump suddenly thought he should, in fact, be able to tell all 50 states' governors if they should or should not take off those same orders.

Like it both ways much?

Next is this. One of my favorite things during this nightmare of a Trump Presidency is when even Fox shuts him down.

Finally, at least today, is this on this President's Attorney General William Barr.

Could this administration get more corrupt?

To which I answer, I don't think so---but they keep surprising us, don't they?

So there you have it. A brief summary of, again, what I've seen to be some of the most important articles out in the last few days.

With Republican Party groups organizing against this President and even the likes of Ann Coulter and Fox coming down, and hard, at times, on him, well, it's enough to give me hope.

Wish us all luck, campers.

Huge New Unbelievabilities From This President

Post image

Breaking this afternoon...

Unbelievable.

If it were anyone else but Donald J Trump, it would be unbelievable.

Just this afternoon, first, is this:  Republican Party President Donald J Trump declared that WE ARE CUTTING OFF ALL AID to the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, the WHO.

During a pandemic.

During the largest, most killing, deadly international pandemic of the last 100 years.

And he's cutting aid to them.

President Trump said the U.S. will stop funding to the World Health Organization while his administration reviews its role in “mismanaging” the coronavirus.

He said the U.S. contributes up to $400 million while superpowers like China, where the outbreak began, contribute closer to $40 million.

“The United States has a duty to insist on full accountability,” Mr. Trump said.

And wait.

It gets worse.

Naturally.

He calls for this because

Second, he says they mislead on the pandemic

He cited the WHO’s lack of pushback to Beijing’s foggy reporting on the virus in the early going, saying it cost the rest of the world valuable time.

THEY mislead? He's claiming SOMEONE ELSE MISLEAD on this pandemic?

Where do we even start, Mr. "It's a Democratic Hoax"?

Then, because he can't be done there, no, no. Not this man, not this President.

Finally, he said  they, the WHO handled this pandemic badly.

He also blasted the WHO’s opposition to bans on travel from China, accusing it of putting “political correctness above life-saving measures.”

Staggering.

What did he do if not handle this pandemic badly?  Extremely badly, in fact. Documentedly so.

Again, "The Onion" can't write stuff this bizarre.

He's accusing the WHO of the very things he did.

Once again, thanks, Republicans!!

Star Gives Us Ways We Can Help Locally

Okay, so we're all in an international pandemic no one would have ever imagined, we're in a stay at home order and we have time on our hands.

With that, are there ways we can help, help one another, locally, and hopefully use all this time we have on our hands?

The answer is yes, of course, and our own Kansas City Star gave us ways to do just that in Sunday's paper.

Herewith:

Perhaps you’re looking for ways to make a difference during this COVID-19 crisis that has affected us all. The possibilities are endless.

You can simply donate to worthwhile causes. That would be one way to get the most good out of the government’s stimulus checks set to arrive in the coming weeks.

Your funds can assist charities that are on the front lines of the ongoing pandemic battle (disaster-relief organizations, hospitals and other health-related groups) as well as those that help people struggling to survive. Food pantries and other charities such as the Salvation Army are requesting donations of food, clothing and other basic-need items.

But don’t forget the many organizations that have been devastated by the virtual shutdown of the economy and are struggling to stay afloat until a return to normalcy. Think the arts, restaurants and entertainers.

Your time is also valuable. Many organizations are looking for volunteers during this time of need.

But perhaps the most basic way to make a difference is simply to be a good neighbor or citizen.

The Star has compiled a list of ideas and resources, which we’ll add to as more become available. Please give us your ideas by emailing calendar@kcstar.com.

DO SOMETHING NICE

The following list was compiled from suggested activities by Doing Good Together (doinggoodtogether.org), a Minneapolis group that provides tools to help raise compassionate, engaged children, as well as The Washington Post and other online sources:
  • Arrange for meals to be delivered to those working on the front lines, such as police, EMTs and hospital workers (first make sure they are allowed to accept food).
  • Send a note of thanks to front line health-care workers.
  • Call or text neighbors (especially older ones) to make sure they’re doing OK.
  • Leave packaged, sealed treats or beverages by your front door as a way to thank delivery people.
  • Start a neighborhood hunt (bear, tiger or whatever) in which residents put teddy bears (or whatever) in their windows for families on walks to watch for.
  • Write encouraging messages in chalk on your sidewalk.
  • Set up FaceTime and Skype sessions with relatives or acquaintances in assisted living facilities.
  • Advocate on social media for individuals and organizations that need help.
  • Support local businesses by buying gift cards.
So there you are.  A great, long and I think pretty comprehensive list of all the things we can maybe do to help one another during this very trying, difficult, even surprising time.

Again, we have time on our hands.  Let's see if we can help one another out there.

Go get 'em, Kansas City!

And kudos and thank you, Kansas City Star!

Y'all be well, be safe and STAY AT HOME!!
