On the continuing debt ceiling negotiations
"What is the Democrat's next offer? Kansas goes back to being a slave state? I don't know what they"--the Republicans--"want." --Bill Maher, "Real Time with Bill Maher", HBO, Link: http://www.hbo.com/real-time-with-bill-maher/index.html
Kansas was never actually a slave state. It was given sovereignty to decide the issue of slavery for itself. Most of the hardest-fought battles over the issue of slavery were fought in Kansas by pro-abolitionist settlers from the East Coast defending the territory from the Pro-slavery Missouri border ruffians.
I love Bill Maher, but this was one joke that's based on a historical misconception. Sure, Kansas is backwards, but to call it a former slave state is unfair.
As a means of purely keeping people from saying mean, ugly, vile or profane or slanderous things, I moderate comments. I'll get your comment up soon as possible (as long as it's not any of the above).
